THWACK Monthly Mission - January 2017

Level 15

Thwacksters, it is important that you remember the journey to the cloud begins with one step.

In this mission you will encounter spiritual cloud guides on your way to the snow-capped peaks where happy little clouds roam. These guides include: Librato, Papertrail, TraceView, and Pingdom.  Use the wisdom and hints they give you each day to answer the questions.

By the end of your journey you will learn that SolarWinds Monitoring Cloud is a suite of SaaS products that helps you solve complex performance and reliability problems with your cloud infrastructure or apps.

We wish you luck as you embark on your journey to the cloud.

Wax on, wax off. Wax on, wax off.

Bring it!

the start of the 2017 generation of the monthly quiz

at least I did better than last month - I got the first one right

Level 12

Great job mcam on getting it right starting 2017 mission!

Me too

Wait, so we don't have a tool that can do /pizza? I know this isn't EQ2, but still.

Question #1: Whenever I see the joke answers for some of these questions sometimes I really, really, really get my hopes up that it can be true. 😞

Solarwinds pizza delivery options are only available in New Zealand in partnership with Domino's Pizza. When your email system crashes an out of band message is sent to your local Domino's Pizza retailer and your preconfigured pizza order is delivered by drone. SO that you don't have to leave the office to get something to eat, making your all nighter just a little less inconvenient! Domino’s delivers world’s first ever pizza by drone

Level 12

Please let there be plans for expansion on this tomiannelli   I'm getting tired of Jimmy John's.

Level 9

I have a custom Pizza alert setup. When the fridge gets below a certain slice threshold it will alert out to my Alexa and order more . I will get around to uploading the template once I am done eating all this pizza.

My peers (apparently) still live in 6th grade.  When they read the Domino's Delivery Via Drone message, I heard numerous wry comments with attached smiles:

  • Can you deliver a steaming back of doggy you-know-what to (ex-spouse, problem neighbor, neighbor with a good sense of humor, ex-boss--you name it)?
  • How about security--will folks use this to deliver (name your illegal or dangerous material)?
  • What will be the recourse when dozens (hundreds?  thousands) of low-flying drones eventually run into each other?  Maybe cause crashes that hurt folks or property below?
  • When you read the limitations for drones (all must be: registered with the FAA; travel no more than 400 high; use specified speeds, etc.), who monitors / enforces the rules?
  • Will there be separate air traffic controllers, or air flight path lanes, to ensure inbound and outbound drones don't collide?
  • If someone knocks down a drone delivering pizza (or Amazon goods, etc.)  and takes the pizza, how can someone enforce laws about theft and property damage?  Will the drone be tracked in real time (via Solarwinds?!) so its GPS coordinates and video feed (showing who knocked it out of the sky) are recorded and sent to police who can use the data for prosecution?
  • Will Dominos cancel delivery if it's windy?  Or if the wind's in the wrong direction?  Or if it's raining?
  • Dominos would deliver up to six miles in one neighborhood, and a guy ordering pizza from a quarter mile further out had to meet the delivery car at the 6-mile-mark.  How will drones extend that 30-minute delivery mark in miles?  At 100 mph, Domino's could deliver to someone 50 miles away (theoretically, anyway).
  • Air temperature was -20F this weekend, wind chills were -36F.  What started out as a steaming hot pizza will end up frozen by the time it got delivered in this weather!
  • What happens to the video feed from drone?  If it records something you don't want recorded (think Google Street View), how will it be erased--or used for future legal actions?
  • Can Dominos deliver to my boat if I give them my GPS coordinates?  Maybe I'm 20 miles out from land and have a hankering for a Hawaiian Pizza . . .

Suddenly the fun and novelty of the new toy meets reality and the way people might abuse the technology.  I could grin at a steaming bag of something unpleasant coming from my buddy--once.  But if someone started delivering rotting fish to the top of my house or garage or front door step on a regular basis . . .

When the Belgium Chocolate delivery drone collides with the Georgian Organic Peanut Butter drone - who gets the copyright on the air-peanutbutter-cups? You flew your chocolate into my peanut butter. No you flew your peanut butter into my chocolate!

A new mission and new childish remarks - I'm sooo glad it's not just me.

Level 11

wabbott and Thwack team, I just wanted to say I'm very impressed with the prize packages! What a great start to the New Year!

they may have a seasonal availability clause...

My question is, what if they send the wrong pizza ?  How do you return it ?

They can't blame the driver....

Wind is a concern....not to mention rain.

Level 12

Will the price go up because they will need to include peppers and cheese with every order since they won't be able to ask at delivery?

Level 11

I believe it is customary to comp you the incorrect pizza while you wait for the correct one to be delivered. It's just good customer service, after all.

Level 10

I was thinking the same thing! Dude, prize game = stepped up!

I foresee traffic control issues at local college campuses....

20 drones delivering pizza's to one dorm building sparks riot/food fight.

Level 12

I agree, great prized to drool/dream about.

It is time my friends.....may the odds be ever in your favor!

Will there be a place to insert a tip in the drone?  Or will it come afterwards via Visa/MasterCard/PayPal?

If you don't tip, does the drone operator target you for something "special?"  Or just black-list your address from future deliveries?

You've heard of "flash mobs" where strangers all show up at a site, coordinated via text or web pages, and dance or do vandalism?  How about drone operators doing the same?

Level 11

Oculus vs Xbox

Oculus  was the far best price i have seen so far in solar-winds (other than fully paid trip to US :-))

Level 10

No more Australia?

New year, new awesomeness! Look at those prizes!

It will be good to learn about the lesser known members of the SolarWinds stable whilst going through this

Level 11

wabbott kindly confirm me this one thing (i already asked this couple of people and never got an answer). And this answer i am sure many will be happy to see/know

If a person was selected for a prize once and AT THAT TIME he was in a country where the prize is not applicable (say for example india/China) so they reverted back the prize.

But later that same person moved to another country (like UK or canada) where the he is eligible for the prize delivery. Will that person be considered for the Lot of correct answers for prize or he is ignored (kinda put in a list saying he is not eligible for prizes in Solarwinds)

Just need a confirmation that there is no such list or block so i continue using my id else i need to create one more id just to ensure i am also a REAL participant in competition like this

I know the number of people like this is very few but still it would be worth to know we are also an eligible participant in the DRAW rather than not knowing.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Any one from Solarwinds who are 100% sure can answer this question

Thank you wabbott I don't know about the rest of the community, but I was starting to get withdraw symptoms having finished both of the December missions . . .

Why was there no All of the above choice for Tuesdays question Why, Why, Why I ask - That would be so, so, so very awesome. I want all of that in my data center.

Level 16

"Magical data elves analyze your data while you sleep"

I like this feature so much I am looking online for a new pillow right now!

I wouldn't be surprised to see RF Disruptors or Jammers used to mess with other delivery drones--especially in college campus areas.

More impressive (and equally unsurprising) would be finding college kids discovering ways to hijack drones' remote control, maybe disable their GPS and cameras remotely, then take over the drone and deliver the goods to a random location, where the hijacker awaits the stolen pizza or Amazon goods.

Level 10

/pizza ftw -- thanks pizzahut, lol.

/gems is also pretty bamf when you're waiting for that elusive group.

Level 9

Bye 2016 and hello 2017!!

I got the first two right - woohoo!!

Level 12

I think you may be the only one who caught my joke   lol

Level 12

I think they removed that several years ago.  I don't play EQ2 but I believe there is now a /browser <URL> command.

Level 15

Hi immanuvelc,

As long as you are a current legal resident of one of the eligible countries you qualify to receive a prize.

I have seen a data ELF since Solaris 2.0.

Level 8

Good Questions.

Level 8

Just noticed that there are no Australian Ts&Cs.  Does this mean that us Aussies are no longer in the pool for prizes? (& therefore only points)
I thought that this had been sorted out last year, as there were definitely Australian Ts&Cs for some of the monthly challenges.

Level 16

I'm going to bed

"Magical data elves analyze your data while you sleep"

Level 11

W00t! Another 150 closer to the fridge.

...just sixty four thousand, five hundred eight to go...

Dream bigger, dream Corn hole....  just 10,010 and i have it.   But the fridge is tempting, might save me from having to watch surveillance cameras all the time to see who is stealing my water from the community fridge in the lunch room.

Level 11

...but if it keeps ordering more, you'll NEVER be done eating all that pizza. So... we're out of luck, is what I'm hearing.

Level 11

I would assume these drones are fully automated - no driver, and no expectation of tip.

Level 11

I wouldn't be surprised either, but using either, or shooting down a drone, is already a felony under FCC regulations.

Also interfering with a drone pilot actually confers the same penalty as interfering with an airplane pilot. So don't mess with the kid across the street flying his drone. You could be unwittingly committing a felony.

I'm just hoping there are some in stock when I get the points

Level 9

I pray they are all that easy! I usually get one wrong for the month

I have two my pillows and they're great!

It's happened to me probably 20 times!  Usually off of a debatable question.  I've found taking my time a little helps some.

That's good information.  As a non-drone-operator, and one who's been annoyed by drones at outdoor events (one was actually at a shooting event, where there were hundreds of guns--making some of us wonder how long that annoying drone would last), I'm happy to have clear skies & quiet air.  And freedom from Big Brother or snoopy strangers.
