THWACK Monthly Mission - August 2020

We know you’ve seen them around—you know who I’m talking about. The Chosen Ones. The Venerated Few. The MVPs. Their capes flow behind them, their eyes shine with pride, and they hold so much knowledge inside.

For this month’s mission, we let them take over, write some questions, strut their stuff. Life hacks, tidbits, things they wish they’d known at the start. They’re THWACK® heroes just doin’ their part.

AUGUST MISSION

Use the mission’s resources to complete the tasks and answer the questions for a chance to win!

Correctly answer each question during the week and you'll be entered for a chance to win the weekly prize.

Correctly answer all 20 questions over the course of the month and you'll be entered for a chance to win the grand prize.

150 points are being awarded for each correctly answered question. There are 20 questions, which means you can earn a maximum of 3,000 points for this mission.

@fakeusername - you do not.  The Product Upgrade Advisor works for most (if not all) recent versions of SolarWinds Orion products.

That's what I thought. Thank you. You got me excited about the upgrade in some of your posts and your videos. I am scheduling the upgrade shortly, slowed, of course, by our change management process.

For Monday's question, can someone help me understand where 5 Steps are listed/mentioned?
When I click the hint link, the splash screen clearly shows 4 steps, and in the first 5 second he verbally states 4 steps ... what am I missing?
Or is this pedantics about clicking the button?

I think the 11th's question has an issue... I definitely read the question right and counted correctly... @yumdarling ?

@tsadler did you "count" the steps, or select the number of steps that were listed on the screen in the video?
There was some misunderstanding of what constituted a "step", they are looking for what was explicitly listed in the video, with the text "Step: 1, Step: 2", etc

@tsadler oh sorry that's my mistake! yeah the 11th was a dynamic/live question, so the answer changed depending on when it was viewed.

Hey my monthly mission peeps!  I just put out a poll for Virtualization Manager "enhancement" from the past!  I want to have the ability to put up the old VMAN Appliance view:

@tsadler For the August 11th question you need to check the "Store" box on the left-hand side pane and then look at the number of filtered results displayed at the bottom right of the results box, the number shouldn't change.

@zennifer That was a great question today. I learned a lot about those special characters. I had a bang cause it to fail on something else I installed recently. I never knew that about the special character you mentioned. Well done!

This may not be the right forum, but I think more people are reading things here right now.

@KMSigma You talked me into doing the upgrade, and I did it last night. I found that the upgrade instructions are serious about applying the Windows patches before you start. I also found that you need to make sure your licenses are all installed. I had a Web Tools license that I had not installed, and it gave me a license error, which would not let me install until it was resolved. I only mention these things so others will know some possible problems and hopefully resolve them.

As usual, it added a map to each of our Atlas dashboards, and I had to resolve that issue. You can't just delete the map. You have to copy the instance, delete the map from that instance, the then move that instance in to be the dashboard.

Now I have 2020.2 installed and I can work on new dashboards to replace those old Atlas dashboards.

Thanks @fakeusername for the feedback.  You are 100% right, with any upgrade there's going to be some level of nuance.  I probably could have guessed at the Windows updates and licensing thing (those kind of makes sense, right?).  As far as the Network Atlas maps - that's great feedback and thanks for sharing it.

When you get your first new Orion Map to replace one of your Atlas maps, I hope that you'll share your before and after with the THWACK community.

@fakeusernameI stumbled on that @ character for 2 weeks .. I have primarily Brocade equipment with some Cisco, and am headed back to Cisco full throttle.  I was adding some new nodes from our Phone system, I added Cisco Routers just fine, when I started attempting to add the switches, I could ping but I could not complete the SNMP walk.  I finally read the whole document provided by Solarwinds... ugh .. what an eye opener!   You know,  I have had so many little weird issues, between the community and documentation, I have not opened a ticket for 5 or 6 years!  That speaks volumes about our community!  I pushed thru my upgrade, just like you did last night!  I was so very fortunate with my outcome, nothing but the Maps were affected, and that was so very easy to fix.   
Thanks for voting for the VMAN console too!   I am so very very fortunate to be a part of such a great community.  You all help me look really good to my peeps!

@zennifer or insufficient coffee in the morning.  Friday I was lacking in the caffeine and recovering from bilateral carpel tunnel release surgery that morning so the mornings cocktail provided by the Anesthesiologist was still doing its thing.

@yumdarlinghave I misunderstood the process behind the monthly competitions?

I ask, as in prior months (only the last two I've taken part in) the weekly prizes were not awarded until the end of the month allowing those of us that are busy or otherwise elsewhere (in my case, holiday and starting foster caring two baby boys) to still get a chance to enter.

Only to find that this month the first two weeks have already been awarded?

What's the story please?

Hi @stuartd!

The weekly prizes are always drawn on the Monday after the week is over. It's in the terms and conditions and how we do it every month (barring my forgetfulness).

At the end of the mission, I draw the week 4, grand prize, and shortcut winner all in one go.

No worries, and I realise I can still do them all to be entered for the grand prize but I can't generte the energy to play catchup with only one chace 😄

@stuartd - I have usually seen the prizes awarded at the end of each week. I figure I will probably not win, but I am saving up points for a set of the mugs for my team from the store.
