Me too, and there's no directions for uploading even if you log in to Survey Gizmo.

Level 9

I like the idea of one month two parts, I've missed out completing competitions in the past due to commitments so this really helps

Enjoy your sysytems voyage!

And now you're hearing the familiar screeching of the 2400 BAUD modem connecting, aren't you, melonizame?

Anyone remember Netscape?  Or Trumpet WINSock?  I was going through some of my old software from back in the '80s and '90s and it was a trip, I gotta tell you.  Although I'm sure that rschroeder and others remember when we used to send up smoke signals to connect...and I don't mean letting out the magic blue stuff, either!!  My, how times have changed!  I think we used to call that "Sneaker-net"!

Ha!  I'm only old enough to have grown up with a rotary phone system and a 5-digit telephone number for local calls.  Getting a 25' curly phone cord extension was AWESOME technology, and contributed mightily to pacing and twirling and twisting that long cord into knots that only the telephone repair man seemed to understand how to correct.

Those who deal with modern VoIP handset cords with curls in them haven't a clue how bad it gets when you've got 25' of cord curled up.

pastedImage_0.png

Going to touch-tone phone sets?  Stunning!  And most folks in my part of the country avoided them like the plague because the phone company charged an extra monthly service fee to support tone dialing.  Which turns out to have been a fee scam.  Sigh.

Level 12

OMG that still irks me when I get to a cord like that - I mean how the heck are you able to move it for one, then the sound quality second.........

I mean come on it takes two seconds to uncurl it.....

Level 12

Oh, Rick, you shouldn't have...EARWORM ALERT!!!

Uh, definitely NSFW but I'm sure a few of you remember this little "Doctor Dimento" gem...

Meri Wilson - Telephone Man - YouTube

Correct, although unless I miss my guess, that first one is a 28.8 (it's got the extra connect strings happening at the end...yeah, OK, total nerd, here)...;-)

I still have a device called an AST GridPad, which was akin to Apple's Newton (tripping down memory lane, here).  It had a touch screen and an early version of Geos (not to be confused with GeoWorks Desktop, but made by the same company, I believe) as it's operating system.  Anyway, it had a pluggable modem dongle, very similar to the pigtails of today, which was, if memory serves me, 9600 BAUD, and came with a rudimentary AOL app.  You want to talk about The Slowskis!

And what's sad is that the security folks know that you remember the phone number you had when you were five.  I do: 30?-985-124?...doh, almost let you hackers in on my secret!

Couple of five digit numbers I remember from way back in the day:

BR549 - "Hee Haw"

26580 - "Kim Wilde" (NB: Not a US exchange but stuck with me nonetheless.)

Not a fiver but a famous seven, though:

"PENNSYLVANIA 6-5000" BY GLENN MILLER - YouTube

I also loved how they would use the "Klondike" prefix in old TV and radio shows for "555" ("Klondike Five, One, Two, One, Two")

Level 9

@yumdarling The link for the hint: question 3 is missing.

Level 15

Hey, yumdarling, do we need to do both parts of the shortcut to get 1000 points?   or is it like the prize where either one will score some points?

Great memories!  But wait--no 867-5309?

Oh, LIKE, LIKE, LIKE, LIKE, LIKE!!! How could I forget Tommy's "Jenny"??  Thanks, Rick!  Appreciate the memory jogger.

Hey Jeremy!

If you complete either part of the shortcut, you will get your 1000 points. Completing both parts does NOT give you 2000 points though. It's 1000 total.

Ooops yumdarling question four is broken:

WEEK 1: QUESTION 4

Close

New Question Text

  1. What changed exactly?
  2. Who made the change?
  3. What impact did those changes have on performance?
  4. All of the above
Level 12

Can you try again for me, please?

Level 9

Now it works fine. Thanks a lot.

How about 1962's hit for The Marvellettes "Beechwood 4-5789"?    "You can call me up and get a date, any old time!"

The Marvelettes - Beechwood 4-5789 - YouTube

Or the much-smoother Carpenters remake of the same song?  The Carpenters - Karen Carpenter Video Beechwood 45789 - YouTube

When I recalled that one I realized Wikipedia probably has an entire page devoted to "phone call songs", and I wasn't disappointed.

Level 9

Dang! Missed Part 1 of the monthly mission. I got to tighten up!

Level 9

The good news is there are two grand prizes this month and you are still in the running for that Oculus Go.

Level 12

Ah yes, when phones came in any colour you wanted, as long as it was black, and the handset was solid enough to use for a hammer.

Level 12

So where's Raquel Welch?
