THWACK Monthly Mission - August 2018

There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to adjust the settings. We are controlling the Wi-Fi. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next question, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your computer.

You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to - The Outer Tickets.

The following THWACK Mission was inspired by actual episodes of The Outer Limits.

  • Since all of you share your work obligations, background, etc. with us on these forums, I figured this was a great opportunity to share a bit of background on our end. As much as the community team would love to take credit for creating questions each month, we actually partner with various technical SMEs in the org to develop the content depending on the product focus of the mission. Sure, the concept and delivery of a mission itself is orchestrated by our team, but it's truly a small army of people that make missions happen every month. This month, the writer chose to take a more abstract approach in the first week to generate conversation, and it did. As a few of you stated, these questions are not based necessarily on policies at your place of work but rather best practices of customer service - the backbone of any Help Desk job. The typical structured questions + hint links will make it's return for weeks 2-4.

As much as we miss Wendy (understatement of the year), I truly appreciate the passion that the community brings to these missions each month. Fun fact... I started monthly missions back in 2013 and have been behind the scenes while Wendy took over, enabling her to own and implement all of her genius ideas and improvements along the way. Ben and I are temporarily keeping things afloat on top of our normal obligations until we have our 2 new hires, but it's invigorating to be immersed back into the experience and see the level of participation and conversation between IT admins that happens here. Be friendly, learn something (or don't), and embrace the incredible community you've all help to create (okay, second understatement of the year). We promise to not fail you.
