THWACK [Mini] Mission: Web Performance Monitor (WPM)

Community Manager
1905_thwack_wpm_mini-mission-crash-test_900x300_blog_header.png

The secret is in the data. You’re sure of it. Running the test was supposed to give you the information you need. But as the test ends, you realize…this is going to have to be done in person. You load the crash test dummies and send them in—so you can figure out if things are going as well as you think they are.

Numbers appear on your screen, hundreds of lines of raw data. Amazed, you reload your synthetic users into the car, laughing quietly to yourself as more and more real performance data accumulates. Slapping on a caffeine patch, you slide your chair close to your desk. Cracking your knuckles, your mission begins. What secrets will this data reveal?

Start the mission!

In case the clue only confused more than helped (like it did me), referencing the WPM feature page is a bit more clear: Website Monitoring Software | SolarWinds .

This week's prize looks like an accident waiting to happen:

Hot liquid in an open container sitting on top of electronics.

Two similar-looking circles next to each other, one heats up your drink and the other charges your phone.  I see lots of overheated phones in someone's future.

Well that went well (Q1) not

It's my favorite thing!  A mini mission.

Sweet prizes too!

There seems to be some inconsistencies on the demo lab. yumdarling

Sometimes "Recycle bin" is critical and sometimes it's not.

If it is not critical, when you check the hint, just assume it is.

Q3 I know that my maths is not the best, but I thought I could do.simple 'adding up'.

janobi
Level 11

The demo is fluctuating, when I logged on originally it had x amount of faults, when I checked back a few mins later it had y amount of faults.  Only problem being that y wasn't one of the available answers.

DanielleH - the lab is changing depending when you log into it.

Based on this, I added +1 to my total (3 at the point I looked!), which came up with apparently the wrong answer. So...

I don't know.

Same here, the answer I wanted to say was not an option. Sucks

yumdarling , It looks to me as though I received points for today's question, even though I got it wrong.  While I'm happy to have more points, I really would prefer to earn them.

When do we get our 1,000 THWACK points for downloading the trail and uploading the screenshot? I did it yesterday...

Thanks,

Dane

Normally after the mission finishes I believe.  But someone with more knowledge will likely have a better idea.

How are we supposed to answer this question correctly if the apparent answer changes depending upon when you happen to check?  This seems to be a common issue with these demo-based questions.

ryhlen.schoeberl
Level 10

there is not a correct answer right now for today's question

jeremymayfield
Level 15

danerada probably after the mission closes about a week or two.  They usually put a date in there.   Do not fret, the points will come, eventually.

jeremymayfield
Level 15

There is always a correct answer, somes times one, sometimes three, sometimes, 3 - 1, sometimes there are a couple of answers, and or simply guessing A. option will bare fruit.

justin.gray
Level 12

This is a family-friendly site. We should have no baring of fruit!

Thanks for letting me know, Roger!

I'll take a look and let you know what's what

I thought it was just me with today's question.  What I see in the demo is not in the answer selection.

It is so hard as to not give away the answer while typing to find help.....

Can someone post a better link for the hint on question 1 - DoD network wont let me go that way.

What Jan and Jeremy said was totally a true story.

We provision the points after the mission is over

For today I saw 1, that wasn't an answer. Then I tried again and saw 3 which wasn't an answer. So I tried averaging the two.

Sending me to the WPM hint put me on the right track to find the correct answer.

rschroeder

I'm wondering whether today's answer should have included reviewing the Environment for Intranet from WEST Datacenter at a specific date and time.  The answers are all even numbers, but so far, refreshing the lab Hint at different times, I see different "steps" in error mode.

pastedImage_0.pngpastedImage_1.png

I only see possible odd numbers as answers for the Steps in error.  Hmmm . . .

zennifer
Level 13

I lucked out ..there was an odd number in critical - and I pushed my answer on a guess !!!

ludovic.mag

I will be happy to have an explanation. I selected 4, and it was not the answer.

I saw one icon as red but when I hovered over the icons I saw an even number that were in critical state. Luckily this was the correct answer so try hovering over the icons and not just taking them at face value.

Hope this helps

I know this has already been stated above, but I just answered the question for the 19th and got it wrong. The demo is definitely showing four steps in a critical state but the correct answer is two?

jeremymayfield
Level 15

Yes at the time the question was written it was 2.

melonizame

also dont forget to add the html code "_blank" after the hint so it will open in a new tab

it is the little thangs.......

Hi Everyone!!!

If you got question 3 wrong and want a redo- a new question has been loaded, feel free to retake.

If you got question 3 right and don't want a redo... do nothing, sail on my friends.

I don't understand today's question.  An application dependency is application + node....so how can one or the other be the single correct answer?

bharris1
Level 13

Yep, I read it that way too and missed it.

asheppard970
Level 13

smttysmth02gt, I am not a DevOps person  but as I understand application dependency, it is not just application + node but also has to do with the systems/components on which an application relies in order to function.  This could be a node, a building-block component (e.g. .NET), or other pieces.  Also, the resultant text from today's answer is somewhat descriptive as to what appears to be going on in the demo.

pastedImage_0.png

And, besides all this, there is only one system listed in the section of the demo screen entitled "Transaction Application Dependencies", which I think is what yumdarling might be looking for here.

smttysmth02gt
Level 13

I am not a "DevOps person" either, but as I understand dependencies in general, it requires a parent and child (or at least 2 components - if a fails then so does b).  In this case, I don't know what they're asking for because you're only given one correct answer as a possibility, with both components of the actual dependency as potential answers.  They should've specified which component of the dependency relationship they were asking for (node/application/parent/child, etc.).

asheppard970
Level 13

Do they need to specify which component (of at least 2, as you mention) they are asking for if one of the two components is already stated in the question?

In the demo, what transaction application dependencies does AzureSHPFE1 from EAST Datacenter 2 have?

I guess my question becomes, if I follow your logic, can, and should, the question be the answer?

smttysmth02gt
Level 13

The problem is I don't know if they are asking for the node or the application as the answer.  Both of them are included in the dependency relationship and both are possible answers.
