Gearing Up for IT Pro Day 2017!

Level 15

Yes, we know it’s only April and IT Professionals Day 2017 isn’t until September 19. However, we want to make sure we do our very best to help celebrate you, the IT professional, on that special holiday. At this time in particular, we’re curious what you think would be a fun, engaging idea for www.ITProDay.org. For example, would you enjoy a quiz on some of the craziest tasks you’re called on to perform in your role, and of course, then seeing your results compared to your peers’? Would you find a funny original video highlighting all the great work IT pros do entertaining? How about e-cards you can share with other IT pros, or perhaps an interactive infographic?

Really, the sky’s the limit and we want to know what we can do on the website to in at least some small way help celebrate you. Share any ideas you have with us by Tuesday, May 2, and we’ll give you 200 THWACK points to show our appreciation.

I think a quiz would be awesome and like last year for a t shirt prize or something.   I think having a live panel discussion where we have the IT pro's log in like the Thwack Labs, but live and you chat with us on air and answer questions, tell stories, and of course there should be head geeks in costumes.

I think a new video from Solarwinds where maybe a real life story was recreated, making it funny if possible and animated for the purpose of helping us find humor when others freak out.

You mentioned e-cards, how about actual pass along cards with a MVP photo on it that we can have as like an alternative to our business cards, we could say to others, find me on Thwack.   Maybe our MVP cartoon us, or we submit a real picture.   Things like this would be fun.

Quizzes are fun, ecards are ok, but my favorite thing - and I show them to the team - is a good funny video ala Tripp and Tyler style.

Level 10

Might be neat to have a flyer that we could print out and plaster around the office to encourage the rest of the team to embrace the day. The flyer might just some inspirational quotes or a rundown of things to check out or do on that day.

Level 10

Quiz and or e-cards are always good things!!

Level 9

I always enjoy sending funny pictures of issues IT personnel see on a daily basis, also love watching funny IT videos about issues, troubleshooting, end user experiences and wacky solutions! For example, had to fix a tool and we performed "Microsoft Magic" which means bouncing the server to resolve the issue. I dont know, funny IT stories are always fun to read about!

Of the suggestions you made, I'm most interested in:

  • The "craziest tasks" quiz and a comparison of our environments taken from that light
  • The Interactive Infographic.

I could also see a contest for submissions about our most "ambitious" problem users--the "early adopters" and technology "advocates" that can cause major security holes to magically appear overnight, or who buy and install the most outrageous devices on our networks (without our knowledge or permission).  This is more than just an ID10T or PEBKAC user.  It's someone who makes unsupportable assumptions about what's secure or possible or affordable or practical.  It could be a department or team who are consistently the worst loose canons, who somehow obtain budget without CIO / IT Director knowledge or approval, and who spent large sums of money on systems that just don't comply with the company's best practices, security requirements, or even with the laws of physics.  Submitting stories in that arena--without giving away who or where (no need to get Legal or H.R. involved here--hey, the stories could even be "nearly fictional" where the names were changed to protect the (quasi) innocent) and then let Thwack members vote for the worst.  The winning submission would get some kind of white elephant prize--something silly but semi-embarrassing to win ("Successfully Coexisting With The Worst Problem User" Award?).

I'm thinking of the I.T. equivalent of the Darwin Awards, here.  Sort of a sympathy award from everyone else, to the person having to work with the worst problem users who significantly add to I.T. stress levels.  I mean, it's I.T. Professionals' Day, right?  And what would be better than highlighting the trials and tribulations of the folks who keep the packets flowing?

Level 14

Quiz is a great idea!

Maybe a "Tongue in cheek" video submission of "A day in the life of an IT lifer" ???

Level 10

Funny motivational pictures are always fun. Similar to...

its not the firewall.png

Level 10

I think it would be awesome to have virtual IT challenges. Difficulty would range from very simple to very difficult and maybe have like 5 different difficulty levels in between. People can not get to the next difficulty level until they complete the easier challenges. Everyone who completes all challenges gets entered to win a cool prize. The challenges would take place in a virtual machine where each person can do actual troubleshooting and use some cool monitoring tools to get to the bottom of the issue. Since IT isn't only about troubleshooting, there can be different categories; a web design challenge for example.

Another idea is to have a live webinar where the viewers help the host(s) troubleshoot a problem.

Level 13

i think a crazy story contest, with a prize of a personalized Bobble Head.

Level 9

Trivia contest, funny comic strip, video, etc. would be an appropriate idea: the more sarcastic the better.  Also, as long as it is not an "atta boy" or a "pat on the back".  I would like for people to own up to their mistakes and not blame IT and then rely on IT to correct them.  A "Thank you" or "I am sorry", does go a long with us.

Your videos are always EGOT worthy. I am not sure if a "Stranger Things" theme would still be a relevant theme. The e-cards were fantastic. I shared them with my IT and I got huge laughs. 1,000 word user contributions of crazy stories read aloud by the Head Geeks. Some goofy prizes and games... Thwack points. Throw in a special announcement or something.

Level 9

I think a funny video would be a great idea!  The more quirky (something along the lines of Mystery Science Theater 3000) the better!  You can have people make mistakes or break something and the MST3K team (or a bad copy of them) could comment and react on it.

Level 9

I am with kcolgan

I say make the SolarWinds Lab team sit down and watch the 1995 Movie "Hackers" and make them "Mystery Science Theater it"...all for our amusement...

Or another terrible IT movie

Level 15

I really like that idea.  That would be awesome and hilarious at the same time.

Level 16

I like the suggestion rschroeder submitted The IT Darwin Awards. It would be nice it included one of your own mishaps. Tell a story of what is the closest you have come to absolutely melting down the network... or how you ended up in the CIO's office explaining your actions.

It would also be neat if we could have a live webinar of the head geeks playing 'battlebots' and everyone got behind their favorite player. Lego Bots would be perfect.

Level 12

Yes quizzes and survey would be awesome with maybe items from the store as prizes.

Level 10

Obscure geek quizzes, like Who was Acid Burn? Or what was Colossus? Do you want to play a game?

Although the IT Darwin awards sounds great. So does MST3k style movie like stated above, or even MST3K style commentary over reenactments of IT Darwin award winners.

Level 7

how about an interactive ecard that takes you to a video, then the video turns into an interactive infographic that turns into a quiz?????????

MVP
MVP

Quizzes or E-Cards. Or Even a printable poster. A quiz with a prize like the below.

Level 10

A funny video about what we wish we could say as IT professionals to our clients/users would be very much appreciated, like a "aren't you glad you don't have this IT Pro in your office." type of thing.

Level 16

Head geeks playing wheel of fortune webinar would be another fun one. Thwacksters could submit (email) the phrases in privately.

Level 9

Or make a compilation video of popular movies and series illustrating how "professionals" hack networks/manage technology.

It would be cringe-worthy but enjoyable.

Level 9

Back in the day, I used to read a ton of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books - I think a video based on that would be awesome!

Level 9

that too, and all of the lab team have to come to a group consensus of the path they take...and vigorously argue why their path is the best path

Level 11

At work we do acronym games. Do a quiz game an acronyms. We have plenty in the IT field to play with.

Level 8

There are way too many industry standard Acronyms in IT and on top of that each organization/company have their own internal acronym. I believe an Acronym game will be a lot of fun.

MVP
MVP

How about asking Thwackers - "How Pro an ITPro are you ?"

  • A 150 to 200 word submission by Thwackers - each with some reward points
  • The best submission (voted up or down) - getting some goodies
Level 9

I really like the e-cards idea.

Level 14

I like the the idea IT Darwin Awards, as mentioned by rschroeder, submit your story (stories) and vote on up during the day (some timezone thinking to consider)

With some nice Thwack goodies giveaways or even some inexpensive Geek Tech (like a few Raspberry Pi Zero Ws perhaps).

Level 9

How about a picture/caption contest? Maybe submit the worst cabling job or worst closet/rack you've ever seen in person?

Level 9

I think a funny quiz and possibly a personal story about the worst incident you have encountered in the last year. Possibly award some sweet sweet thwack points for participation and or some cheap solar swag like a shirt or even a tool.

Top it off with a live panel where the best stories are shared.

MVP
MVP

what about something along the line of "whose line is it" where we toss out a topic and 2 or more head geeks  get randomly picked to act out a scene of IT mayhem..

Having a few of these in video format to watch would be great...

Level 7

Special IT Pro Day T-shirt in the Thwack Store gets my vote!

Level 9

I like the ecard idea, the ecard could have a picture of an Einstein bobble head included, for the Genius'es we deal with.

Level 12

I always go for a good IT memes

Image result for it memes

Level 9

I think JeremyMayField has a great idea in a live discussion.  While all of the SolarWinds members are fantastic about answering posted questions a live discussion would be even better.

Level 11

Love the e-card idea, everyone always roles there eyes @ an IT joke. A e-card would just show everyone how geeky you can be!

Level 9

I like the "who's line is it anyway" idea... that could be quiet funny especially with Kong & Leon   also enjoy the idea of submit live questions to the staff or do a fun behind the scenes again.

Quiz should be fine. How about fixing something in solarwinds lab followed by a one-liner how we fixed it.

Level 11

im going to go out there with the Quiz but make it a live stream pub quiz like the shows, would be great mix it up with thwack questions and a little general knowledge from around the world. prizes for the top ten members unless members could sign up to teams then do team thwack points

Live stream quiz would be a great idea, maybe two to cope with the time differences like you do for thwack camp.

Some exclusive IT proday 2017 thwack swag would be good, maybe only available in limited numbers during that day.

Level 11

Plenty of good ideas here. Quizzes can be nice, and sharing tales is always fun. However the day is observed, though, you arrrr going to talk like a pirate, right?

Level 11

How about getting some of the funnies stores and doing a bracket. Like the march madness sidekick one. That way the community gets to vote on the stories..

Level 10

A troubleshooting Olympics.  Create demo environments with the same issues, fastest resolutions get prizes.

Level 9

I would love a bunch of eCards, memes, videos, etc. tailored to each segment of IT Professional life so I can send them to co-workers.

Something that says "I feel your pain".

Level 8

I think a page to post pictures of all the tech swag we've accumulated over the years would be interesting. I'm not just talking about Solarwinds swag either (though that makes up a large portion of my hoard). I think it would be cool to see the little action figures or various stress balls that we all collect.

too late....it has already been done.

nothing to see here, move along.

Ok. SWAG and clothing is nice. But what I really appreciate is a FREE LUNCH. How about a pizza party for you and up to 5 of your IT colleagues? We could take pictures or have a global conference call so it could be Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or whatever all around the global. I mean really how expensive could a few pizzas be?
