Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged

Hello everyone,

I just want to get your input here.

What does 'Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged' means to you?

From my understanding, even if the alert is still active, it should stop sending email once it is acknowledged. Otherwise, it will repeat the send email action every X minutes.

So what is the use of 'Do not execute this action if the alert has been acknowledged already (Recommended)'?

As per support, this should be checked just to stop repeating the action once the alert is acknowledged. Why are there two options if this is the case?

  • It's more of you need to repeat an action while the alert is active to remind your team of critical issues that require immediate attention.

    https://solarwindscore.my.site.com/SuccessCenter/s/article/Trigger-an-Alert-to-repeat-until-acknowledged-or-resolved?language=en_US

Normally, once it triggers the action, it just sits on the Active Alerts page.  That option allows you be alerted(based on whatever action you configured).  It just means the alert condition still holds true and needs your immediate attention.

  • The alert will only triggered once until it resets right (if the reset condition is the recommended one)?

BUT, the ACTION will repeat UNTIL it is acknowledged. So meaning, it should stop the action once acknowledged (alert still in active alert page)?

  • You are overthinking this.  What is your end goal?  Do you want it to just trigger once and only sit on the Active Alerts page.  If that is the case, uncheck both.  If you want to be constantly reminded? then choose, Repeat this action.  The first option is somewhat misleading as even if you check that, and you acknowledged the alert, it would re evaluate it and re-trigger it again.  Although I would say I no longer have a Solarwinds Environment to verify that.

  • Our goal is to continuously receive emails until someone begins addressing the issue by acknowledging the alert. Once acknowledged, the emails should stop, even if the alert remains active.

The option 'Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged' should be sufficient for our needs. However, according to support, this is not the case, and the other option must also be selected 'Do not execute this action if the alert has been acknowledged already (Recommended)', which makes the phrase "until the alert is acknowledged" seem redundant.

  • Agree, it is redundant, but I would have verified that by testing it out which I cannot do.  As for the support, I don't know what to tell you.  If that is what they tell you, then it is what it is.

  • I tried the one in the article you provided, and the email action keeps sending even after acknowledging the alert.

Support confirmed they were able to replicate. Unfortunately, only solution is to select the other option as well and he does not agree that it is redundant.

Thank you for your time   Slight smile

At least someone agrees that it is redundant.

  • lol.  Curious to know what's the logic behind "it's not redundant".

  • Hi kenyamson ,

As soon as the Alert is generated/triggered, the associated actions from that alert's alerting template should only executed once and should not repeat.

For example: by default an alert template that has an action assigned to it which sends an e-mail when the alert template conditions are met, will only send the email once/execute the e-mail action once.

With 'Do not execute this action if the alert has been acknowledged already (Recommended)

    Unless...

    - You have 'Add Escalation Level' enabled with another action assigned under 'Escalation Level 2' within the alert template's 'Trigger Actions' page

    - The action doesn't have 'Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged

    - A 'Reset Action' in place

    - Some condition or time based configuration is in place somewhere which causes the alert template to hold off from executing the action unless it is not acknowledged by the time that policy/condition/rule's time is up

  • Hi  ,

These are the options for trigger actions.  'Do not execute this action if the alert has been acknowledged already (Recommended)' is the default selected option and with this option ticked/checked you get the notification only once. 'Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged' on the other hand can be used for mission-critical devices we are monitoring where 0% downtime or threshold violations is acceptable.

There is no need to overthink this really, keeping the  'Do not execute this action if the alert has been acknowledged already (Recommended)' selected should be perfectly fine for you unless otherwise.

'Repeat this action every X minutes until the alert is acknowledged' - an OPTION to do the action/s that is configured in an alert repeatedly until one of the responsible team clicks on the ACKNOWLEDGE button from the All Alerts widget, All Active Alerts Window, or the Alert Details Page.

Exactly my point. It should stop UNTIL someone acknowledges the alert.
