SolarWinds Serv-U MFT Server as a Secure File Transfer/Sharing Solution for Distributed Teams

Today's world brings new challenges, including a new way of team collaboration work in business - working from home, remote access, efficient data transfer, and sharing. Hybrid IT environments are becoming a daily reality, all with increasing demands on security.

For these reasons, the importance of effective collaboration between remote teams is growing, leading to an increased need for data transfer and sharing. This data is often in the form of files/documents produced by individual remote team members and need to be made available to a defined group of other team members. To allow distributed teams to work efficiently and securely, the following requirements need to be met:

  • Secure file transfer not only in the corporate network, but also in the public network environment
  • Multiple file transfer from a single user to another single user or defined group of users
  • Ad-hoc file sharing with the ability to:
    • Define a target group of recipients for file sharing
    • Define expiration of file sharing
    • Send a file sharing request
  • Controlled and logged accesses and operations to transferred/shared files
  • Efficient user management of file transfer and sharing system
  • Unified and user-friendly interface to file transfer and sharing system

In an existing hybrid IT environment, the above can be implemented in various ways. In many applications, it’s not possible to use a cloud solution due to the requirement for full data and environment control, security requirements, or the need for customization or integration with other existing systems. Therefore, an on-premises solution may be preferable both now and in the future.

SolarWinds® Serv-U® MFT Server meets the above requirements with the following features:

  • Secure File Transfers
File transfers supported by FTP, FTPS, SFTP, and HTTP/S over IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Serv-U maintains compliance with PCI DSS, HIPAA, FISMA, SOX, and other standards involving securing data in transit. Serv-U MFT provides SSH key-based authentication, password authentication, or SSH and password-protected two-factor authentication to facilitate quick and safe connections. The storage solution also offers automatic IP lockouts to help prevent brute-force attacks. FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography can be used as needed for added security.

  • Secure File Sharing
Serv-U MFT Server comes with built-in security features designed to make secure file sharing for business easier. With Serv-U MFT, you can set files to be password protected, automatically expire, and be deleted after a configurable period. Serv-U file sharing functionality lets users send files to and request files from anyone. When deployed in a data center, Serv-U Managed File Transfer Server provides “ad hoc” file transfer service to end users on existing infrastructure and under the control of existing security policy. File sharing is easier with advanced features like the ability to share files already on the server and the ability to control server-wide settings.

  • Integration and customization
Serv-U offers native integration with Windows Active Directory. This lets users leverage Active Directory authentication for user logon instead of authenticating against regular Serv-U user credentials or those stored in a database. Serv-U FTP Server and Serv-U MFT Server can be integrated with third-party applications and shared databases. They can also be branded with custom logo, colors, scheme, and text.

  • Integrated Web Client
The Serv-U Web Client allows users to access file transfer using web interface from their devices, so file sharing can happen from anywhere at any time with no need to install any applications. With this web client interface, end users can manage and view file transfers and file sharing from and to Serv-U Server.

  • Management Console
The Serv-U Management Console provides access to the Global or Server level settings and the settings for the domains created. Through these menus, access groups and users at the global or domain level can be created. The Management Console also provides statistics and logs for the entire server.

  • High Availability
Serv-U supports N+1 horizontal scaling to meet high-availability requirements. Additional Serv-U FTP or MFT Server instances can be used to upgrade for additional redundancy, throughput, or session capacity. Serv-U Server and can be clustered for high availability.

The Serv-U Management Console provides centralized access to the settings for all areas of MFT or FTP Server.

Serv-U uses a called Serv-U Gateway for high-security applications requiring a DMZ segment.
