THWACK Monthly Mission - September 2021

“In space, no one can hear you scream...” but we bet alerts would still find a way to make themselves heard. Which is enough to make you scream loud enough to pierce the endless void of space. All IT pros know the fear and that scream. We feel it down to our chilled marrow.

We’ve all had alert fatigue at least once, and we never want to go through it again. To help defend yourself, we’ve gathered advice from people who have been on the front lines and protected themselves from the barrage of alerts by ending it before it even begins. This month, we’re asking THWACK MVPs—both current and previous—how they defend against the onslaught of an incoming alert bombardment.

You say you’ve got an inbox rule for that? That’s not protecting yourself—that’s just shunting problems aside until they fester and become even worse! Let’s be better about tuning alerts that matter, converting non-important alerts to reports, and keeping our operations running smoothly. After all, why send out 300 alerts when a succinct summary report could suffice?

It’s said that good fences make good neighbors. Ergo, great defenses make great technology neighbors. That’s the goal this month as we reload our knowledge with the help of the THWACK MVPs and make ready for Alert Defender!

  • I'm a little bummed that they never even addressed the debauchery from Day 1 and 4, and just drew a winner.
I can only imagine there were like 3 people that got them all right that week, it'll be interesting to see the same person win week 1 and the Grand Prize lol

Or no one will win the GP :/

  • I was notified via email by yumdarling in July that I had won the week 1 prize for July. A couple of weeks later, they put someone else's name on there as the winner. I sent yumdarling some emails, but I never heard back.

So even if you win, you don't necessarily win. Oh well.

  • ah what a bummer! ... I mean I understand this is just a cool event they try to hold for the users, but at this level, it should be a little more "tailored" ... I'm not even going to act like I'm not bummed about this month, I usually get them all right, and let's be honest, I love cool free stuff ... but alas, it's insignificant in the grand scheme, and life goes on.

  • Well, it looks like yumdarling left SolarWinds around that time (according to LinkedIn), so the folks left are picking up the pieces and doing their best. It was disappointing, but I understand.

Like you said, it is a fun event. I look forward to it to get my day going. I have a couple of brothers who also have Orion instances, so we sometimes confer on these. One of my brothers won in June, and he got his prize, so there is that.

  • I'll count myself as one of those 3 then ... Slight smile
Admittedly, day 1 was a complete guess.
