THWACK Monthly Mission - October 2018

The Good, the Bad, and the Undetected

You see, in this world, there are two kinds of companies: those that hope they’ll never be breached, and those that already have been. Either way, you’ve gotta watch your back. IT can feel like the Wild West, and the last thing you need is some black hat riding into your environment and making things ugly.

Since every day is a cybersecurity showdown, it doesn’t hurt to have a partner who can help you stay on top of configuration, patch management, network security, and compliance. Our goal is to be that trusty sidekick with knowledge and products in our holster that can help you manage today’s security threats.

Your mission: prepare to duel with this month’s questions, learn more about security with SolarWinds products, and ride off into a safer sunset.

Giddy-up!

  • Yeah, sierra1011, have to admit that I'm a little jelly on this one.  Enjoy your adventures "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and congrats to you and all the winners this month!

  • Sorry but this is the best prize this year, just saying emoticons_laugh.png

  • I like that graphic ashepard.  emoticons_happy.png

And yes ebradford is quite correct that we are only human contrary to popular belief from outside the industry that thinks of us geeks as emotionless robots.  emoticons_happy.png

  • Very well stated, pony10!  I agree that the questions could have been presented in a different manner (I have already suggested to the GEEKS that if they want people to get the answer from a single page, they present it in PDF format) and yes, there have been consistency issues.  As ebradford just reminded us, though, we'uns is all human!

Your comment about the outside tech having issues is spot on and I cannot tell you how many times I've had that happen (I've been around computers for 41 years meself).  I just have to stand back, get a big ole "cat-that-ate-the-canary" grin on my face and let them realize that "by the book" does not always solve problems.  I thought this very appropriate:

    i-have-no-idea-how-to-do-your-job-but-4119516.png

I also want to thank everyone for the spirited debates, discussions, dialogue, duologue, diatribe, dissention, declamation, double-talk and all the other "D" words.  While we might not always see eye to eye or bit for byte, we are all in this together and I hope we can sally forth in the IT spirit of "let's learn, have fun, and do good."

  • Another possibility is that test makers are human. Humans are imperfect beings. Imperfect beings are prone to mistakes. Sometimes test makers make mistakes. Let's not deny test makers the ability to be human, nor deny that they could make mistakes.

One biology professor I had would show the results of how many test takers got which questions right or wrong on this tests. Any question that the number of incorrect responses exceeded 2 standard deviations was discarded because it means that either the question was wrong, or the training/education on the topic was incomplete. This is to say, that it is an understood problem with the education and testing process that sometimes questions can be wrong, or test upon information insufficiently communicated.
