THWACK Monthly Mission - July 2021

KMSigma the API Guy, KMSigma the API Guy… I’m sure you know the rest. If you’ve ever wondered to what heights of revelations the API can take you, you’ve come to the right place to learn. Buckle in, comrades—we’re here to gain some knowledge from the API Guy himself, KMSigma!

Before you know it, you, too, will be looked up to and venerated as the esteemed API-Human of your company. There are many, many, upsides to this, and only one downside—just ask KMSigma himself. I’m sure I’ve sent him 250,000 emails asking him to do the thing, work his magic, and create something from where before there was nothing.

But since you’re already buckled in to the ride, and July has already begun, let’s go learn something!

MISSION SHORTCUT

Complete the mission shortcut between July 5, 2021 and August 1, 2021 to be entered to win a Typewriter Keyboard

It’s time to crack your knuckles and get back on that keyboard! For our mission shortcut this month, we’re asking you to write your own script for your environment and show us you have what it takes to make the SolarWinds® Orion® API do your bidding.

The choice of language is your own, the choice of task is your own, the choice of elements on which to operate is your own. This mission was made for you!

Prerequisites:

For this mission, you’ll need an active deployment of the SolarWinds Orion Platform running with at least one node being monitored. It doesn’t need to be your production environment—it can be a small VM running on your desktop.

If you don’t have a development/testing environment and need a copy of SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) or SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) to set up a small one, you can download a trial here: download NPM trial or download SAM trial.

Mission Requirements:

Do at least one task using the SolarWinds Orion API. It can be as simple as changing the caption of a node or as complex as setting custom properties on a plethora of elements. The choice is yours, but we encourage you to stretch your scripting legs and think about something you’d likely use in a production deployment.

Requirements for Submission:

  • A before screenshot from the web console showing what you plan on changing.
  • The script you’re using to do the work. Please be sure to include comments in the script describing what you’re doing and remove any sensitive data.
  • An after screenshot from the web console showing the script did the work.

Bonus bragging rights if you share your script (with good comments and sensitive information removed) in the Orion SDK forum.

Once you’ve captured your screenshots and have your script ready, click the submit button below to get started.

If you’re looking for inspiration, you should check out the Wiki on the SolarWinds Orion SDK project on GitHub.

  • I'm slightly confused after reading question 2 and watching the video hint.  The question asks "What ultimately determined the Wheel of Scripting?"  As English & grammar go, the question makes no sense.  As the video hint between 5:00 and 8:00 goes, I've got nothing.  What's the question supposed to say?  "What ultimately determined ORDER OF the Wheel of Scripting?"  Something else?  None of the  available answers explain determining the Wheel of Scripting, to the best of my understanding.

  • Hey friends - i changed the question so it made a lil more sense - let me know if you have any more questions!
