IT Pro Day Puzzler

IT Pro Day Puzzler

“IT professionals only need to be celebrated one day a year,” said someone who’s never worked in IT before. Yes, IT Pro Day is only one day (each third Tuesday of September, which is September 21 this year), but we know you solve challenging problems every single day—and for that, we here on THWACK honor you. *tip of the hat*

If one thing unites IT pros around universe, it’s their desire to fix problems. It doesn’t matter if you’re a network engineer, a systems expert, a database administrator, a help desk guru, or a security specialist—our passion is solving problems. Those problems can scale from the mundane to the catastrophic, and you all encounter—and solve—them every day of the year.

Here on THWACK, we asked ourselves: “Wouldn’t it be nice for IT pros to solve something without having their manager calling repeatedly? Could it be fun to take a step away from their monitoring system that are lighting up like a mid-1990s rave? After all, that’s what their regular days look like.” Our unanimous answer: we think you deserve a break.

This year, for IT Pro Day, we’re still giving you a conundrum to puzzle out, but the intention is 100% fun and 0% stress. We’re harkening back to those days when people would casually sit on their front porches, in their favorite rocking chair, a beverage close by, a pencil in hand, and a puzzle book challenging their cerebrum on their laps. At least one day a year, it’s nice to have a challenge without you carrying all your organization’s technology needs on your back.

We can’t tell you that you should have September 21 off as an international holiday (SPOILER ALERT: you totally should), but we can tell you whatever’s sitting in your inbox can wait while you take a much-needed break and point your highly evolved technomancer brain towards a brainteaser you’ll enjoy. Although it’s not in our power to give you the day off work entirely, we can give you a burst of dopamine during your typical humdrum day.

Today’s the day to step away from the keyboard, grab a pencil, and challenge your brain in a fun way with our clues taken from the annals of technology, pop culture, science fiction, and elsewhere. Trust us, whatever is sitting and waiting in your inbox will be there when you come back.

This is just a way for us on THWACK to give back some fun in thanks to all you do for your team, your organizations, and this community. After all, we wouldn’t be here without you.

  • In a crossword, you get to try an answer and see if it fits.  In this contest the first time you put in a wrong answer you are done.  There was no warning that answers were unchangable, this is COMPLETELY unlike any crossword in the real world.  If you are going to do something like that you must make sure the user understand this.  This month's contests both make me want to stop participating.
