Each time I see an article about Facebook I know it can't be good

funny - I had not thought about Dameware before and assumed it would be too expensive for us. The challenge has revealed the pricing and it seems way more cost effective than I imagined it would be. Job done for the challenge then

I usually print the card only when its the crossword format where the answers are connected to future questions

I have an additional answer for today Use your workstation deployment software to issue a remote reboot for the user, just so they don't have to go through the trouble themselves or, even better Configure an additional action in your helpdesk software to reboot the users computer that triggers when a they open a ticket in…

day three (and four) worked fine for me

its funny how so many techies do a really bad job of this and pretend its not needed. I am a convert though - it has saved me too many times

first time looping in cloud services with O365. Very obvious that monitoring is vital, just starting to figure out how to do that now.....

do the "config comparisons" settings make any difference? You can change how many lines are displayed as well as comparing the full side by side
-
yep - same here. Now looking at DRS for next year.

Thanks for this series. This is yet another one for the bookmark list so I can find it when I need it.

I take questions like this as proof that I can find obscure technical issues by exerting searching skillz. My google foo is strong, so I had no problems with this one.

Reminder to folks to read all of the Congratulations message screens - there is extra information in there you may need

Couldn't agree more. IT Service Management is more than just purchasing a package to record all this stuff - it must be backed up by solid processes and meaningful process.
-
We use an internal doc server for most of that, but its an uphill struggle for the majority of techies - apparently As for certifications, they are a nice to have, but the availability of so many bootcamp type classes that have an almost guaranteed pass mean that most technical certs are essentially useless. We never rely…

We had one manager who referred to moving things "to the iCloud" but it could have been almost any buzzword from a conference somewhere

Congratulations Kristen, it was great meeting you at the Austin SWUG so now I know who I'm chatting with

I'd love to show a picture of my office, but its full of junk - in a much less satisfying way than those tidy offices show However, I do have a nice sit stand desk frame with a really nice white oak/red oak desk top that I made.

I like all 8 of those points. One comment for rschroeder #2 though - don't be afraid to get outside help. No team can know everything about a new or changing environment, often the needed skills can be sourced externally to help bring the whole team up.

combination of NPM, SAM and WPM (including offsite locations) - just wish there was an easy way to correlate all of these sources to easily connect offsite slowdown to internet link rather than server performance. Or to connect that if multiple locations report a slowdown its not likely to be the network.

I missed your other article, but love what you're talking about here - off to find the first one now

I used to be wary of products and tools that performed tasks traditionally done by people. But as my workload has increased I've become totally reliant on this kind of automation. From the alert and monitoring point of view it has become much less useful to get an urgent alert for high cpu from an application server than…

but to answer the question more directly. Now we have established SW as a useful vendor, we can almost get the bottom end limited version to see what its like for real then expand the license as we need it. We did that with WPM, but will need to expand it now we have taken the time to really use and understand the product.…

maybe the question is what is normal, or what is expected. Expectation is usually several factors removed from what is possible, let alone what is normal But for sure, baselines demonstrate what is normal. Identifying bottlenecks allows us to progressively improve the what is possible, which allows the normal to improve.…

as with all these things, security on just one aspect is like dropping rocks in a river - it takes a whole bunch to dam it

hang on there is something seriously wrong this month...... ..... ..... ..... nobody has asked when the points get assigned

The key for me is the first word - "Service" The Service being up usually consists of many connected monitors and variables that have to meet for the service to be running well. Conversely, there are many monitors that are meaningless in relation to the service being up.

also don't assume that your own career path fits in with your employers plan. Over the years my job has changed - for the better. Keep evolving and progressing, if you are not learning new skills you are getting left behind by all of those who are.

todays question was my favorite of all quizzes so far
