I always re-read the questions, even after the first period or comma

the Daleks of IT - love it!

build standardization and working on change standardization as well

my favorite link to that picture is the management request "why can't we outsource our physical network management?"

Best described as a series of unfortunate events. Was already an established, confident, technically oriented lead a very, very long time ago. Maybe a little too confident? Working on a file server running OS/2 Needed to re-format a disk in the server, so carefully copied all the data from D to E to keep it safe Off to…

Welcome gminks ! Glad to have you onboard, can't wait to see your take on SAM

I was the same for today's definitely don't agree with the chosen "correct" answer, but hakuna matata

completely agree - it is the engagement of staffers that make this a "must be involved" experience. Customers who are not using Thwack could get so much more out of their investment in product by engaging here.

for those of us who still have "hard drives" that include moving parts - those "legacy" units

darn it! Now I have to order one

Now thats my kind of documentation - who needs to spell correctly

You know that won't be enough

retention is usually dependent on what is being logged. Normally 30 days, but some requirements mean much longer. [edit] also depends on if the log data is cross-referenced by other sources which will impact its retention

On premise solutions are still just as valid as cloud based. If the only audience is inside the firewall, access data inside the firewall there will always be the need for on premise I doubt we will be more than hybrid for at least a decade

Indeed it is possible to do it that way, but shifts the burden of maintenance into a whole bunch of custom properties. We decided to just use mail system groups so we could manage the group in simple, single location. which now means we can't get alerts if there are issues with the email system, but for the rest of the…

Didn't even think of searching for Netware I'll what it shows up in the graphs Netware is pretty old school, it would be interesting to see what is and isn't included in that.

same here - love those Palo Alto boxes. Makes the ASA look silly. All we need now is for Solarwinds to support them...... Last months Lab video was showing off the the shiny new SW data center is using PA's as well, so it can probably be assumed that this support is coming
-
we are looking at this currently and are attempting to make sure that we get alerts for only those things that require alerts, but still allow other monitors to trigger hour of business alerts or email only alerts etc. I see this as a Event Management function (ITIL) rather than a monitoring function - if its important…

for all you windows folks - grab a copy of cygwin (or cygwin/x ) so you too can play with this stuff without having to resort to a full linux workstation.

I've just setup Plex with PlexPass and DVR connected to an antenna. Over the air TV in HD - even nicer is the the Plex DVR has commercial skip where it completely removes the commercials from the recording. Goodbye CableTV, I'm officially a cordcutter.

excellent song!

I've noticed that as the various protection tools get more "machine learning" embedded, the more opaque they get in terms of seeing what they do to determine what is a threat. That means its much more common to see a proliferation of white listing and various "allow" methods to sidestep the fact we can't easily see why…

when we started these discussions with our vendor, it all started with the mentality of ensuring that voice quality was maintained. still really only putting toes to the water with a limited start.
-
we have just upgraded to NTA4 and are exploring what we can do with flow.
-
not wishing to split hairs here - but 16% is hardly dominant. The largest market share maybe, but only a few percentage points difference from its nearest competition is definitely more like a marginal advantage

this is all about allowing rating and feedback frominside NCM/SAM and making a real connection between those adding templates/pollers and those using them. Right now there is no feedback loop, so those downloading contributed templates/pollers have no mechanism inside NCM/SAM to provide feedback, suggestions or ratings.…
-
this would be awesome, We have a bunch of remote sites with single server, one or two switches with workstations/printers etc - total overkill for the cash needed for a polling engine.

+1 for Michael Stump Security as a separate, standalone will always be playing catchup. Security must be built in from the start, not overlaid by a discrete component. It is pointless to attempt to add layers to prevent attack against a badly written or poorly implemented website.
-
Exactly! The point of these challenges is often forgotten - it's to learn about the product and these past few pages of comments certainly help that aim

Same here for public cloud - gotta be govcloud for most things here
