Does there exist step-by-step instructions for recording in the newest version, either docs or video?

Just completely rebuilt, from the ground up, using the newest version of WPM, 2023.3.1, on a new VM Win server 2022 and activated the license from an old Win server 2012 w/version 2015.x.x on it. Totally new to me. I'm in search of something along the lines of "WPM for Dummies" to recreate some of the recordings I had in place on the old system. Not that may, only 15 websites but I've tried a few recordings and they're not showing up on the dashboard and I'm not even sure if they're created correctly. We don't need to navigate through any of the websites, just ensure that they are up and available to be logged into. In the old version, this was simple but in the new one, there's choices of Pingdom (which I know nothing about), Orion server or locally which I'm not sure of the difference between the two. Any guidance would be appreciated.

  • There's definitely stuff of this nature around, probably in success centre, but while I dont have these to hand

    1) Record stuff

-Log onto a solarwinds server or a server with the player installed

    -Log in with an account

-Search WPM in the search bar, or should see a new or an old recorder. Use the new one unless you have to do otherwise

-Type in a URL, then hit record.

-Do important stuff on that website if that's important.

-Save, you'll get prompted if you want to make it live

    2) Assign the recording to a player

    -Follow the prompts, or

-Go to solarwinds, wpm settings, manage transactions

    -Assign to a player

    3) Maybe make an alert for it.

Pingdom is like WPM but in the cloud and SaaS. Takes care of more stuff for ya.

  • Thanks for the insight. The websites we are concerned with are public and internal. Our main/only concern is are they up and accessible. No other navigation or action to the recording is necessary and we don't use generic accounts to access these sites. To log in would take credentials and I won't use mine as we change credentials every 60 days which would reek havoc on my AD account come the change. This new (to us) procedure of saving the recording to Orion server, Pingdom and local have me confused. You've explained Pingdom but what is the difference between Orion server and local? And why do they have a password to secure a recording? Why is that necessary? No one else accesses this server but me.

Also, since I have "created" recordings, how do they go live to the application? I made the recordings yet I don't see them in the app dashboard.

    TYIA.

  • I may be missing something but it doesn't explain the difference in saving locally to save to Orion server. It also does not give any detail into how to get the app to start monitoring the recorded action. In the previous version we were using, (granted very old, 2015), the app would automatically set the recording into the queue to monitor. This one has extra steps to save in different location, secures the transaction with credential (in our case, unnecessary) and doesn't set the recording to monitor directly. What steps are necessary to get the recording monitored? Can I turn the credential security off? thanks.

    • Open/save to Pingdom is SolarWinds SaaS solution that runs synthetic transactions.
    • Open/save to Orion Server will allow you to connect to your SolarWinds Platform (aka Orion) server to open/edit/save recordings.
    • Open/save locally is to your local computer running the WPM recorder.
  • Ok, that solves where to save it but is the credential add necessary and can it be turned off? Also, how do I get the recordings to live monitor? Thanks.

  • 2) Assign the recording to a player

-Go to solarwinds, wpm settings, manage transactions

    -Assign to a player
