You’ll see frequent mention of the term “Orion” in the following pages and throughout this Wiki. In summary, Orion was the name of the underlying platform upon which many SolarWinds products operated. A good analogy is that Microsoft Word runs on Microsoft Windows as SolarWinds Hybrid Cloud Observability runs on the SolarWinds Orion Platform.
For clarity, beginning in 2022, SolarWinds is deprecating the public use of the term “Orion” when referring to the self-hosted monitoring solutions and will be referring to the Legacy Orion Platform as the “SolarWinds Platform.”
But as any good IT professional knows, one cannot simply do a find and replace for hundreds of thousands of lines of code. With that in mind, the term “Orion” will continue to be seen within the SolarWinds Platform for many years – specifically when referring to the SolarWinds Query Language and the API.
For simplicity, if you see Orion in the following pages, please be aware that this is synonymous with the “SolarWinds Platform.” The authors will strive to be clear when we discuss “Orion” entities with the SolarWinds Platform API, but many of us have decades of experience working with and describing the solution and old habits can be hard to break.
