One of the features sometimes overlooked by new and experienced SQL Sentry users is our web portal, a web-based user interface. While it has great potential, some haven't fully embraced it yet, often due to concerns like feature parity with the desktop app or simply being less familiar with how to use it.

I'd like to share some exciting features we're working on to enhance the experience. One highlight is the flexibility offered by our custom dashboards.

In the past, users frequently asked for a function to create dashboards focused on specific databases, applications, or jobs, but this wasn't possible at the time. Now, with the latest version, you can easily build custom dashboards tailored to your needs, whether for a single database, an application, or a specific job.

Scenario

Consider a critical database running on a server that could result in significant company-wide disruptions if it has performance issues. Suppose a user needs to create a dashboard for this database to monitor key performance metrics such as CPU consumption, database activity, waits, and I/O. Here's how to accomplish this:

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Select "Create a Dashboard"

  1. Add Widgets

  1. Choose the Server Hosting the Database

  1. Select the Metric
For database-specific dashboards, look for metrics prefixed with topsql. databases.

  1. In the Instance Section, Choose the Database

Summary

The new custom dashboard offers users more granular visibility and flexibility to customize experiences. These improvements make the web portal a valuable and essential tool for SQL Sentry users.
