Unlock SolarWinds Service Desk Insights Faster with Pre-Built Power BI Templates

SolarWinds Service Desk offers robust and capable built-in reporting features, providing valuable insights directly within the platform. However, some users prefer the advanced customization and visualization options available in Power BI. Working with Power BI can be a daunting task for users who are unfamiliar with the platform. Its extensive capabilities come with a steep learning curve, requiring significant time and effort to master. Many users of SolarWinds Service Desk might find it challenging to configure reports, create dashboards, and ensure proper data integration without prior experience. This difficulty often leads to delays in extracting actionable insights from service desk data, ultimately affecting decision-making and efficiency.

To address these challenges, SolarWinds has introduced customizable Power BI dashboard templates that significantly reduce the time and effort required to get started. These templates are available in IT service management (ITSM) environments within Service Desk, as well as all service providers enabled in an Enterprise Service Management (ESM) environment within Service Desk.

The Power BI templates are pre-configured with essential KPIs and metrics tailored for service desk users, such as ticket trends, SLA compliance, and asset performance. By automating complex setup processes, including data connection via JSON tokens, these templates provide a plug-and-play solution. Users can bypass the technical barriers of Power BI, focus on analyzing insights, and make informed decisions faster—saving countless hours otherwise spent on manual configuration and troubleshooting.

  • Hey Team, Awesome work as always.

I am however,  experiencing an issue with the (SWSD) Power BI integration. While the integration successfully pulls historical data, it only retrieves data up to 08/10/2024 and does not include any data beyond this point.

To confirm, I performed a manual data export directly within SWSD, and it provided data up to the hour I requested it, so I know recent data is available in the platform. This suggests that the issue may lie in how the API fetches data for the Power BI integration.

    Could you please confirm:

    1. Whether there are any known limitations or misconfigurations in the SWSD API that might restrict the integration from pulling recent data?
    2. If there are specific settings or adjustments needed in the Power BI integration to ensure it retrieves up-to-date data?

Any guidance or troubleshooting steps you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Steve

  • Yes, you are right. GCC cannot access the template apps as mentioned here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-govus-overview. You can continue to use the file which you got  from support. Please ask support for the latest file if required (the latest has few changes in terms of created s updated at metrics)

  • If I go to Power BI and try to install the app from there, there are no templates available. It says I'd have to add to Organizational apps, and I'm not sure how I would be able to do that.  (I am my tenant's Global Admin, but I'm not sure we can add someone else's app to Organizational apps.)

Support originally gave me a file that was a PowerBI dashboard, and i was able to use that, but it looks like this new method isn't going to work for anyone in GCC.

  • I strongly suspect this is a problem with GCC.  In order to sign into PowerBI to do things in GCC, we have to use a different URL to log in or else we get errors like this.  Here's the URL we in the GCC have to use to use PowerBI: https://app.powerbigov.us/

When I click get it now, I get this:

    And then I get this:

  • That's the problem.  When it tries to log me in, it tells me "You've selected Microsoft Fabric free" and then tells me it's not available for my work or school account.
