DNS User Experience Settings

Forgive the entry level question. To set up the DNS User Experience Monitor, you would enter the target IP to resolve. What do you enter in the DNS Query Results box other than a *. Also what are the recommended Response Time Warning Thresholds to enter. Thanks.

  • Generally users enter in a DNS name such as "www.solarwinds.com" in the "Name (IP Address) To Resolve" field. Then they either enter in an IP address/s in the "Expected DNS Query Results" field that the name should resolve to. Alternatively you can use the asterix "*" in the "Expected DNS Query Results" to signify that any valid IP addresses returned for that DNS record are acceptable.

You can also do the same for reverse lookup. Specify the IP address of host with with a valid reverse DNS record in the "Name (IP Address) To Resolve". Then enter either the name that it should resolve to, or an asterix to simply validate that any reverse record exists for this host.

Thresholds are based upon your environment. I'd recommend setting up the monitor and letting it run for a few days before defining acceptable warning and critical thresholds for the monitor.
