Solarwinds Platform in Azure - Ping External Nodes

Hello,

Does anyone here run their platform server on a Azure VM? If so, how are you monitoring external nodes (i.e. WAN IP addresses)? The only way I see it possible is to put a public IP on the VM but that's not something we want to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Travis,

use the ICMP only monitoring method. If you don't have a large environment in Azure you'll need to setup a NAT gateway or an NVA of some sort or you'll be stuck with putting a public IP on your box if you do that I would just lock it down with the network security group only allowing exactly what you want out.

Unfortunately NAT gateway doesn’t support ICMP. Public IP is not an option for us. I think our only workaround is to install an additional polling engine on-premise to run ICMP only to our external facing nodes.

I am adding Solarwinds Agents on public facing PC's or servers, then using that agent as a remote collector to access the isolated devices.

We ended up creating another polling machine at our physical data center to poll ICMP only nodes over the WAN
