Internet Traffic History - Peak/Max Percent Utilization?

Hello, THWACK community!

I am new to creating reports in SolarWinds/Orion, and I'm struggling with getting accurate percentages for the peak transmit/receive utilization stats on my interfaces. I have been unable to find any solutions while searching online and I'm hoping someone more experienced knows what I'm doing wrong.

It seems like I have managed to get everything else configured correctly such as my Average Transmit/Receive percentage matching my Average Transmit/Receive data measured in Mbps.

I have attached a few pictures to provide examples of how my 'last month' report is currently configured, and how the data looks in the report itself. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • If nobody knows of a solution, this thread can be closed. It seems to work fine most of the time for 'last week' reporting, but 'last month' does not match the peak usage at all. From reading around on here, it seems like the built-in percent utilization tools are just not good for anything beyond averages. The interfaces pictured above were 10Gbps so it's pretty simple math.

If anyone else is here because they are experiencing the same issue, you will likely not find answers in old threads. I moved on and just made a simple excel formula. I export what useful info I can get from Orion and slap it in a spreadsheet to get the rest.

  • If its only failing after a month, is it a data rollup issue?  The default out of the box settings is to roll detail records to daily records.  In settings > polling settings: "Hourly statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days".

    Setting Default value Description

    Detailed Statistics Retention

7 days Specify the time period in which all statistics collected in the SolarWinds Platform database are summarized into hourly statistics.
    Hourly Statistics Retention 30 days

Specify the time period in which all statistics collected in the SolarWinds Platform database are summarized into daily statistics.

Daily Statistics Retention 365 days Specify how long daily statistics are kept in the SolarWinds Platform database. After the specified time, the daily statistics are deleted.

  • Hey, monitoringlife. Thanks for your response! It's possible this is a data rollup issue. I had not taken that into account. We are using the default values of 7, 30, and 365 days. It makes sense that our weekly reports have no issues, but it's still odd to me that our peak data would vary if pulled from the same summarized statistics.

I'll likely just have to keep using my excel formula if that is the issue though. I have been advised to leave the retention settings as-is since there's some worry about server capacity. I work for an ISP that has been using Orion to monitor tens of thousands of interfaces so I get hit with the red tape whenever there's doubt lol.

  • I also have 10's of thousands of interfaces, so I feel your pain.

You can always run this by support to see what they say on it.  If you get any updates please let me know as I am interested Slight smile

  • Hi, can you tell me how to create this report, I cant find the peak %

  • Hi, maurogzz. I spoke too quickly and had to delete my previous response. I used the following options in the pictures below.
I never did figure out how to get it to properly work. Since creating this thread, I learned some basic SQL/SWQL and began creating all of my reports and alerts through queries instead. I'd highly recommend doing the same.
