SWQL Study Group for the complete novice - thoughts?

Just throwing this out there and wondering ...

My coding skills are pretty much non-existent. I have been a hardware guy all my life and just when I think I've got a handle on something and create a new query which subsequently doesn't work I get all deflated. So off I go a Googling and a Thwacking trying to see if someone has already built that wheel before. And frequently I find the answer to that is yes, they have; only it was so long ago that things have changed and the script is so far from usable / working that I'm back at the start again.

Anyway ...

My point is, I wonder if there is any merit in a SWQL Study Group to help learn this stuff from the ground up.

I've no idea if it would work; who would run it (combined effort / self led / experienced friendly coder?); structure or anything... but maybe a few like minded code n00bs, could find someplace/someway to form a self help learning group.

Thoughts?

Especially if you are like me and want in on a group like this?

  • Thia is a great idea, and I like the thought of classes. I'm in SWQL studio daily, always building queries so it'd be fun to see how SolarWinds, the community, and/or Thwack MVP's could all contribute. I'd like to help in some fashion if possible.

I've put a bunch of queries of my own out in the Content Exchange. https://thwack.solarwinds.com/content-exchange/the-orion-platform/m/custom-queries - those are just scratching the surface of queries I've crafted. I use SWQL Studio every day to extrapolate data from SolarWinds.

However with the dependence of building your own data structures in Modern Dashboards, I believe it'd be prudent for SolarWinds to start something.  has truly a lot of great content that will help, and had I not got into SQL prior to SWQL I might have been struggling myself...

My 2 cents (for what its worth) would be to offer some official content within the Customer Support Portal for customer ingestion (I think thats the Virtual Classrooms / SolarWinds Academy).

Certainly lots of ideas here, and I think on-demand content to start is wonderful.

Absolutely needs to be some sort of official approach / recognition to this. IMO.

OK - I get that SWQL Studio isn't a SOLW product - but SOLW provided a series of products NPM, NCM, etc that rely heavily on SQL (and by turn SWQL) and a by product of that is an expectation from us, the clients, that this is supported. Even if not through official support channels, then comprehensive documents, or academy on-demand videos would be better than hoping the right person in THWACK sees ones plea for help.

  • Kevin - at this stage I'll take anything and try to make use of it.

I guess the real time interaction is a bit pie in the sky thinking, but hey, let's start at the tough end and work back to something reasonable Joy

  • I don't necessarily agree that this has to be SW officially delivered.

It will be wrapped in to Thwack I would suggest, so has that official linkage, but there are people in the community that could lead training sessions on the use of API.

Someone taking on the subject of how to (for example):

    • Available methods to authenticate in a script
    • Securing scripts/code
    • Design approach
    • etc.

Those that have knowledge on a particular area of the use of the API and SWQL Studio can put forward a class idea they would be comfortable hosting. This would expand the topic list and provide the breadth of resource to make it happen. There are downsides in terms of consistency, may be quality control, etc. but better to have something out there than not.

Consistency could come in terms of co-host perhaps..

  • I've got something I'm going to test with the THWACK MVPs that might give us a possible solution.  It would all be hosted on THWACK (which will be helpful because we wouldn't have to manage/troubleshoot a third party integration).  It's a dead easy solution, but I never thought of it.

  • I still need to find time to go back and watch some (most) of those sessions.

  • I know this thread is about a year old, but where do things stand on this?

  • It has had on and off traction throughout the year. Part of what slowed any take-up (I think) is KMSigma's announcement about the book.

That said - if you have any ideas about how to practically do this, then I'm all ears.

I don't know of any "meeting software" that's free and would allow us to keep notes or similar, but essentially we just need a place where folks can drop in and ask. I know there is THWACK, before Kevin jumps on me, but to be honest, not all posts get the traction / help / insight we might need.

Anyway, once we can identify something to do this with then we can start it up.
