SWQL and SWIS not talking

I am reading SWQL requires a connection to the database via SWIS. Where can I find SWIS and how do I configure it to allow SWQL Studio?

My goal is to create custom queries for our dashboards, but SWQL Studio is being denied access.

*Note - SSMS works just fine and I have been using it to access the SolarWinds DB for years.

  • Thank you for a quick reply! But how do I use SWQL Studio if I am not connecting to the DB?

I really need to know why I can't connect:

    In: <https://thwack.solarwinds.com/resources/b/product-blog/posts/intro-to-swql-studio>, @michael100 states:

"The connection itself is made to SWIS on the server (the same Information Service covered in the previous post). By accessing via SWIS, instead of SWQL itself"

Where is access to the SWIS program?

  • There is no "SWIS" program, per se.  The SolarWinds Information Service (SWIS) is a system service that runs on all servers running Orion Platform software.  If the Orion services are running, you should be able to connect to SWIS using SWQL Studio.

When you first open SWQL Studio, you should get prompted for the server name - that's the server running the Orion platform software, not the database server.
