Orion 2020.2.6 Upgrade Experience

I just upgraded 12 scalability servers (and a bunch o' modules) and the primary poller in about 2 hours. I was upgrading from orion 2020.2.5. I did lose the web interface update page with SolarWinds after it started. Not sure what happened - suspect a poorly timed network hiccup. I monitored the upgrade via watching task manager locally on the primary until the primary website was available and loaded the upgrade console again. I created a post about display issues with the all nodes tree, and have not noticed any other issues yet.  The new custom properties UI does work, and I noticed warnings about Orion local accounts which matched what I read in the release notes. The CVE's about the user elevation were the primary push for the upgrade. Overall a good experience.

  • I installed the trial licence on a fresh OS , 4 cores CPU , 16 GB ram, SSD storage and it toked over 8 hours to complete taking 5 restarts of the installer to pass all errors.

After that it worked fine until the first windows reboot when WPM Browser and WPM probe started opening over 20 processes each at the same time ,
taking all computer resources and even causing system interrupts that lead to multiple OS crushes.
If this is happening on a fresh install that dose not even have any WPM recordings i cant even imagine what will happen when you have 10 player location each running 20 recordings.

I gave up on testing WPM and removed the module. After that the installation was stable and working as expected.

The conclusion is , if you have WPM don't upgrade production until they come out with a HotFix.

  • I have wpm, and did not run into issues with the upgrade from it - so I don't think WPM 2020.2.6 is a no go. I have a dev system that needs a new fresh install, I will have to see what happens. All I can think if is the usual stuff - .Net issues, windows patches, antivirus exclusions, installation as admin/disabling antivirus during the install, user policies, etc, that can affect an installation.
