Orion Plataform - Time Series

Is the SolarWinds solution capable of ingesting and maintaining at least 200,000 time series every 5 minutes? If not, which one is best?

  • For the Orion Platform products, there are two types of monitoring that happens:

    • Polled data (requested from a node every X minutes) - I refer to this as INQUIRE monitoring
    • Informed data (send directly to the polling engine from the node) - I refer to this as INFORM monitoring.

If my math is correct, you would be requesting over 600 items per second given the above numbers.  Any workload like that would kill most servers if it's doing the INQUIRE method.

What exactly are you looking to monitor and with what frequency?

A single server, with one disk and one network interface is drastically different from a stack of sixteen switches with 48 pets each.

Once we have that information, we can have a better discussion about limits.

  • Simultaneously collect 200,000 data on performance and availability metrics from monitored devices every 5 minutes.

  • Sorry, maybe I was unclear.  I'd like to know exactly what you are trying to get.  How many nodes (devices)?  What kinds of nodes?  How are they connected?  Do you want to run agent or agentless?  Be as thorough as possible so we can have a good starting point for the discussion.  A single Orion instance can handle up to 1,000,000 metrics (using standard polling cycles).

Also - is there a reason that you posted this in the Alert lab?  It seems like a better question for the Orion Forum (or whatever product you are thinking about using).
