Please can you provide more details about the backup sets and policies supported, and the licensing and pricing schema (per node, per disk space...)?

One more point, is it only agent-based backup or does it support agent-less backup?

To answer you question about pricing - it's very simple. We have various tiers, each of which includes a set number of servers/devices being protected plus a defined pool of cloud storage capacity, priced as an annual subscription. If you want to add more devices above the selected tier, or if your data grows to exceed the pool capacity, you simply upgrade to the next higher tier, and you're good to go.

On your other questions, we are agent based. The agent is installed on the physical or virtual machine, and each client can be configured for its own local selections (filesystem,systemsstate,networkshares,SQL Server,Exchange,SharePoint, etc). You can configure one set of selections per data source, and apply multiple schedules. Data is retained for 90 calendar days by default, regardless of the number of daily backups performed. Additional retention can be configured via archiving rules.

Backup profiles can be configured and assigned to devices during deployment to automate selections and schedules and simplify the initial installation.

Our backups are file- and folder-based, which offers advantages over image-based and agentless solutions because of the improved, speed, granular selection, and smaller storage sizes. This architecture, plus our built-in deduplication and compression, results in sending very little data to/from the cloud on a daily basis.

Perhaps cgroot​ or backup-artist​ can add more detail.

You mentioned in the documentation for the product you are HIPAA compliant, are you meeting other compliances such as NERC-CIP as well?

Is there an on-prem solution in the roadmap?

If I understand NERC-CIP properly, I think the question is, can SolarWinds Backup help you comply with NERC-CIP and the answer is yes our product can help check the boxes in some of the categories that NERC-CIP outlines.We can be the backup product for your BES Cyber Assets if you have access to them. You can use our product to test your recovery every 15 months as outlined by NERC-CIP standards.

I can't speak for our product managers and the current roadmap, but since this product is a Cloud-First solution, I'm thinking the answer is probably no. Do you require an on-prem only solution? Is your company opposed to having the data offsite? I'm just curious as there are typically reasons for the request for an on-prem solution. In case you aren't aware we do offer an option to use a LocalSpeedVault  (think dumb local, NAS, usb storage), which allows for Local backups, in addition to the cloud backup. This would employ the 3-2-1 industry standard of having 3 Copies of your data:  prod, 1 local, 1 offsite. Keep in mind the data is also Encrypted with AES-256 Encryption if this is a concern for your company.

Just started my first backup and watching it go.   I am doing all cloud for now, i have local resources tied up with live backup data, this is a test for me for the moment. 

Excited to see how the product develops in this environment, but is there any link to the existing On-Prem Orion suite? I assume the agent is totally different to the existing Orion Agent, so if we are monitoring all of our servers using this agent, will we now require an additional agent running on the machines that need backup protection, and has it been tested to ensure no conflicts occur between the two said agents?

If I am reading the documentation correctly, there doesn't seem to be any dependency on you owning SolarWinds Orion in any way shape or form, the only difference between your MSP Offering and this product is that you can now protect on-prem/virtual assets rather than just cloud - is that accurate?

@David Smith, Glad to have you taking it for a test drive.  You are correct, No dependance on you owning SolarWinds Orion, but if you are we have guidance on using SolarWinds backup to protect it.

As with any backup agent, if your running multiple on the same machine you need to be careful not to overlap the schedules because you could damage recoverability of both products.

Both offerings allow protection of local and remote devices, physical and virtual and both are cloud first solutions, but allow a local storage option to add redundancy and speed restores.
