Remember previously muted alerts when unmuting all alerts

I'm sure that title is confusing but here is a scenario:

You have hundreds if not thousands of nodes with some of them bound to be muted for various maintenance activities.  For this example we will say 50 nodes are muted.  The patching weekend comes up so you mute all of your nodes, but before you can do that, you must note all 50 of the nodes currently muted individually because when patching is over and you unmute all of your nodes, those 50 nodes are also unmuted, causing unnecessary alerts because you wanted them to stay muted for whatever reason.  I am not sure how exactly to go about creating such a feature, but a start may be something like a persistent mute feature, where when enabled on a node there would be a different way to enable and disable the muting than just Unmute alerts now

  • I do agree with what you said aLTeReGo for situations where all Nodes across your entire environment need to be muted.

However I still agree with solarwinded's request with some slight adjustments...

In our case we have over 100 offices around the world.  If maintenance is taking place in a single office or that affects multiple but not all offices, we need the ability to mute an office or those offices affected by the maintenance without disturbing the others.  Therefore Pause Alert Actions will not work for us most of the time.  So, like solarwinded said they do, today we note which were previously muted and ensure they are muted afterwards.

However there is also the situation of some previous mutes that might expire during the maintenance and we don't want those to be muted once maintenance is done either.  We have had situations where this has happened.

To also handle these situations in a more automated fashion, my suggestion is a bit different...

First, give me the ability to Mute/Unmute Alerts for a Group.  I realize I can accomplish this in Manage Entities but I am talking about providing the ability on the Group Details page like currently exists for Nodes on the Node Details page.

Second and also from that Group Details page, provide the ability to record the current state of Alert Muting prior to a full Group mute.  This could also be in the form of a return to the previous mute state button on this page.

Third, only return to the previous mute state for those whose previous mute orders did not expire during the maintenance window.

You had likely seen similar requests from me through meech a while back.

  • Thanks Alterego, that is a really good idea.  I will give it a try

  • If you're going to mute all nodes during a maintenance activity, it would probably be better to instead simply 'Pause actions for all alerts' instead. This will maintain your existing muted notes while still preventing alert storms during maintenance windows.
