Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Down for Over Five Hours

Did you unconsciously open Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp several times throughout the day on Monday, only to get a “Couldn’t refresh feed” message? Did you try again every 20 or so minutes? Did you maybe even restart your phone, not once thinking websites as large as Facebook could possibly go down and believing it must be your own technology?

Rejoice: it’s not you, it’s them.

Facebook and each of its apps went down around 11:40 a.m. ET Monday morning and stayed down for almost 6 hours due to networking issues.

We began running our own uptime checks for Facebook.com at 4:00 p.m. CT, so we could know the moment it came back up. At 4:45 p.m., we were notified of the site’s returned availability from one of our North American probes.

If you don’t have testing and alerting in place yet, consider using SolarWinds® Pingdom®. Thousands of users trust Pingdom to let them know if their sites are up/down, monitor transactions, user experience, and performance.

What should web professionals think about in the aftermath of an outage like Facebook’s? What are your tips or best practices? Please share your opinion in the comments.

  • Almost everyone now has a profile on one or more social media sites. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or all three can be used. You can examine the current costs and get a better idea of what you want here

  • Ugh, I hate when that happens, and I can say that their servers broke down quite a few more times in this period. As an influencer who makes a more significant part of their income from Instagram, it's hard because you never know how much it could last the server problem. But happily, I use this platform https://megafamous.com, and even if my Instagram activity might drop a little bit, they make sure to make it even better than it was before. They even helped me become an influencer, and it was the best decision I ever made.
