NPM Virtual Machine (.OVA)

I would like to see NPM (and other SolarWinds modules) offered as a VM (.OVA). This would remove the Windows and SQL Server requirements from the product.

I believe that this would also make a customer PoC more simple for the customer as they would not need to request a physical server or virtual machine for testing.

I see many software vendors moving in this direction. Most notably, VMware creating a vCenter appliance that no longer requires Windows / SQL Server and is scalable to cover most environments. This should also provide a more controlled environment / framework for SolarWinds to work within.

I would also love to see this. To me, for a monitoring application like NPM you want it outside of the servers you are monitoring.
Plus, like the OP stated, you are not tying up a OS and SQL license which is a significant cost.

Some environments will not allow for such a thing as requirements for patching, OS versions, etc. within company policy will give it a big NO.
For some small shops it may be okay...

Seems like a great idea for PoC and maybe smaller environments. In larger environments with multiple pollers, separate database, web server, etc., I'm not sure how effective virtual appliances would be. SonicWall's GMS basically works that way, with defined roles for each server in the deployment. It seems to be very easy to consume a lot of resources.

This is a great idea, but, would you then have each module become a virtual appliance that somehow interfaces with the others? NPM, IPAM, NCM, ect?
