What are the differences between risk assessment and environmental impact assessment?

Is there anyone who can help me out and guide me about what are the differences between risk assessment and environmental impact assessment?

  • To make it simple, the following graph shows environmental risk assessment.

Environmental risk assessment mainly answers how much impact a specific hazard might have on human.

Firstly, we need to identify whether the hazard is acute or chronic. We ususally use short-term test (Ames Mutagenesis assay), Long-term test (Chronic carcinogenic bioassay) and Epidemiology (To study the incidence rate of disease in real population).

Secondly, We will conduct a dose response assessment. This step comprises of the quantification of the relationship between Dosage and Incidence. For dose response assessment, we normally further divide it into carcinogens and non-carcinogens.

The next step of the environmental risk assessment is the exposure assessment. This step is mainly to find out the size the nature of the exposed population, as well as the duration of the exposure.

After all these, we can now seriously characterize each potential hazard and come up with according strategies to tackle them.

Environmental impact assessment, on the other hand, revolves more around the impact on our mother nature. Hope this clarifies your question.
