With the default settings the following happens:

ARM scans the permissions of all folders, down to the deepest level.

Up to level 8, all folders and their permissions are written to the database, even if the permissions of a subfolder are identical to those of the parent folder. You can display (expand) at least all folders up to level 8 in the tree of the resource view.

From level 9, only folders whose permissions differ from those of the parent folder are written to the database. From this level on, if the permissions of a folder are identical to those of its parent, this folder is not written to the database and is therefore not available in the resource view.

With the first setting (Maximum depth of scan) you define how far down ARM scans. If you are 100% sure that no permissions below a certain level will change on your file server, you can adjust this setting to reduce the time needed for a scan. If you are not sure, leave the setting to unlimited.

The second setting determines up to which level folders are written to the database, even though the permissions are identical to those of the parent folders. The higher you set the value, the more folder levels will be visible in any case and the more database space will be consumed.
