3rd party patches approved by default

I have noticed that when I publish a custom 3rd party patch, it is always approved for all computers automatically. This is a real problem since I have to remember to immediately remove the approval to prevent the patch from being applied. Is there a setting to change this behavior, or is this caused by something I'm doing?

  • This is most likely due to your existing automatic approvals.  I automatically approve all critical and security update classifications.  If any third party party update falls under either of these, they are automatically approved causing the same problem you are describing.  My work around is to 'duplicate' the third party patch an change the classification to updates (or whatever you dont auto approve).

I would like the ability to change my automatic update rules through Patch Manager however I have been unable to figure out how to do this.

  • Thank you, I never considered the auto-approval rules but that's exactly what was happening.

  • Greetings Mark.

Patch Manager does not curently provide the ability to manage automatic approval rules. I have added this item to our Feature Request list for consideration.

Regarding the undesirable automatic approvals of third-party updates -- if you edit the existing automatic approval rule and explicitly select one or more Microsoft products (e.g. Windows; Office), rather than "All Products" this will exclude third-party and other locally published updates from being captured in that automatic approval.

  • Thank you for the feature request.

I thought about that after I posted and this method works much better!  Removing 'Any Product' by simply unchecking the ones you don't use certainly does the trick.  Thanks!

  • and you can save on drive space by selecting only the products that you need.
