Sounds like maybe you would want to setup a trap for certain conditions in the Netbotz so it sends a trap immediately when the condition you are looking for exisits. Then as soon as it happens you'll get a trap for the issue at the NPM. I suppose it might also be able to do this with syslog.

In this situation if the data stored within the MIB table is transient and does not fit in with the polling cycles within Orion, you need to look at the real-time monitoring protocols such as Syslog or SNMP Traps. This way when the device identifies a certain condition or event has taken place it will generate an event message and send to to a collector - Orion. As is always the case with SNMP polling, you are dependant on what the device can provide in data at that point in time.
Within the Syslog or SNMP Trap collector in Orion, you can then create an alert action when these messages are received.
I am not familiar with these devices, but this is possibly a better fit for you.

adelgigs Mar 25, 2010 8:32 PM (in response to Mark Roberts)Thanks for your replies - it sounds like I need the SNMP Trap collector. From what I can see this is not part of the standard Orion installation, but included in the Engineers toolkit ?
Could you please confirm.
Thanks, Simon

Re: SNMP polling
savell Mar 25, 2010 10:55 PM (in response to adelgigs)Orion NPM does indeed have both an snmp and syslog collector.
You can do a number of advanced alert actions based upon the receipt of a trap or syslog.
In version 10, I beleive that we will also be able to change an interface status based upon a trap (which you may find useful in this circumstance).

adelgigs Mar 25, 2010 11:35 PM (in response to savell)Dave,
I'm struggling to find where in Orion you capture SNMP alerts. The syslog collector doesn't seem to do anything with SMNP.
What I want to do is caputure adhoc SMNP alerts from network devices.

Re: SNMP polling
savell Mar 26, 2010 4:02 AM (in response to adelgigs)So when you use Orion Service Manager from the poller, do you see the SolarWinds Trap Service? (and the SolarWinds Syslog Service). Are they both started?
You should also have a trap viewer and syslog viewer installed on the poller (SolarWinds Orion/Syslog and SNMP traps) - are there messages visible in both? Have you configured your devices to send traps/syslog to your poller IP address?
You should also be able to use the web views to show the same messages.
It is possible that someone installed your Orion implemenation without installing these options.
Dave.
