Enabling Custom Poller output into Web Reports

Hi,

I struggle to understand why this is not possible and maybe it is possible and I have been directed incorrectly.

I am trying to simply add the output of a Universal Device Poller which takes the serial number from querying an OID and add it to an inventory report.

E.G.

Hostname

Vendor

Machine Type

Software Version

Serial Number

IP Address.

I would expect that this should be a relatively simple thing to add however this does not seem to be support for Web Reports and is not included in Report Writer (although I think this should be possible with a SQL report.)

Can a feature request please be raised to improve the reporting framework to make all variables captured easier to incorporate into a report..

    Hi,

Unfortunately the response from SW was less than helpful in that it was stated as not possible. However following the instructions you submitted above this has given me what I need with minimal customisation for my requirement and just creating a SQL report in report writer.

Not the most flexible way but it works, and surprising that this is not something included in the base web report functionality given that it is not the most complicated set of SQL joins. I assume that if SW permitted the population of a custom property based on custom poller status then web reports would work out of the box (for non trend based use of custom poller values.

Thanks for the assistance in the current workaround. However feature request still stands if SW aim is to retire Report Writer and include all functionality in the web console.

  • Since you have a more urgent need, I recommend opening a support request via telephone with Solarwinds.  While you might get a good response from Thwack from your Feature Request, you're likely to get the definitive answer more reliably with a support case open AND your query to Thwack, than by just the Thwack message alone.

If Support DOES find a way to get you the information you seek, please post it for others to see.

    Hi,

So we have about 5000 devices and yes the ultimate would be that this information will be in the SMT CMDB (and accurate) :-).

At this point in time getting this available in a report regardless of the content type for example even if it was a Cisco and I wanted to pull out a report with all devices and total quantity of x defined in OID Y. It is still not an easy task. However I will investigate the link you have sent above to see if it answers the question or points me in the right direction.

    Thanks for the response.

  • In a worst case scenario, you might be able to leverage NCM's Job / Scripting capability to run commands at every one of your managed devices and display the information you need.  You'd still have to aggregate the output of every job.

At smaller organizations in which I've worked, we kept manual track of the information you seek.  Hopefully Thwack can get you the solution you need, or that your device count isn't so large that getting this data manually won't be too tedious and extended a task.

  • I searched Thwack for those three brands; it's apparent their market share isn't yet sufficient for SW to have spent enough time on them to develop reports that you need.

The closest I found was this page:

Create a report that shows Serial numbers for switches and stack members

Do they have their own (proprietary) inventory management solution?  Or does your company use an internal Purchasing or Inventory Management solution that can be leveraged to get you the data you need?

Perhaps others will be able to provide you the information you seek, or maybe you'll be able to get enough information from the above link to get you started down the path.  I look forward to the creative ideas others may provide, that can do exactly what you wish.  I'll be watching this space for that info.

    Hi,

I am using Fortinet/Palo Alto/Juniper devices and SW does not pull the Serial number.

  • I see 46 Reports with "Inventory" associated with them in my NPM 12.01.  I can discover and display all my Cisco and F5 and HP serial numbers using the canned reports.

On what devices are you hoping to discover serial numbers via UnDP output?
