Open agent to Netpath

Hi Solarwinds

I like Netpath and it could be BIG if it could be deployed not only on windows OS.

In that i picture some kind of industrial hardware or miniPC that run some kind of embedded linux

That could be perfect for remote office environment and telco POP without IT stuf.

  • Netpath from Raspberry Pi would be great! It is so much more easier to place a tiny Pi in switch closets compared to running a Windows PC. Such decentralized monitoring would address so much of our concerns during fault identification and remediation.

Now up to 70% of our troubleshooting window is consumed in impact identification and fault isolation.

  • Logged in to +1 and bump this. Netpath on a Raspberry Pi would be immensely beneficial to us.

  • Thanks for getting that clear...

somehow I expected that as the next step for Netpath...

Like planglois wrote we looking for something that could run diagnostics and quality of experience from

places that you just can't  have Windows server or PC ....

The opposite is true, I'm afraid.  We're not currently planning to build that, but I'm keeping my eye on requests like this to determine if we need to change that.

  • That for getting that clear..

I know you can't give a date or what release ...

but can you commit that it's something Solarwinds will work on...

That will be cool if you can change the FR to "somethings we work on"

  • Regardless of whether the agent framework supports Linux or not, the NetPath plugin that does the probing would have to support Linux for NetPath to be installed on Linux devices.  The upcoming SAM release certainly won't include that.

  • I was under the impression that the Linux Netpath agent would be in in SAM 6.3 RC.  But it appears not

  • I would say that more than 50% of them would have POE. AC is for utility & lighting, not battery protected.

2 main reasons behind my vote:

    • Raspies or small fanless computers do not draw a lot of power so should the 48vDC power option is not available, a converter is cheap.
    • Paying a licence of Windows only to monitor Netpath or few other metrics are quite expensive when multiplied by the number of sites. That added to security constraints (read "added costs and complexity) from our corporate IT policy....
  • Got it.  Makes sense.  Do these sites have POE?  AC?  DC only?

  • I manage hundreds of sites where we have only RF transmission and networking equipment, no PC nor Servers except for our few core sites. On top of that, those sites are DC powered, so having fitting a PC or server that fit on a rackmount shelf an that has -48v DC  input, and not too expensive is almost (if not) impossible... a small fanless computer should suffice...
