I've worked with a lot of Network Monitoring software over the past year (WUG, Solarwinds, and OpManager to name a few), and the most useful of those tools allowed for quick and easy configuration of alerts through the web interface.
You open a node, select Alerts/Alarms, select type of Alert you want to configure (Disk Utilization, Free Space, Status, etc), set the threshold, set the individual/DL to be notified if the threshold is breached, and set a reset threshold.
