Network Atlas migration to Device Groups

Hi guys,

We have old-style (custom view) Network Atlas maps to find what sites have issues quickly.

We now what to use the device group option (I think it's one of the options) to achieve the same, so we can quickly navigate to the site and see that device has some issues.
I cannot seem to find an option to integrate the existing custom map per device group or modify guilt in:

Every time I modify and save it, it reverts to the the old view. Am I doing something wrong, or do we have other options to achieve the same results?

Thnaks,
Misha

  • If I'm understanding you correctly, you are trying to edit one of the default views, but it is reverting post-change.

What version of SolarWinds are you using?

If it's fairly rec1ent, what you would be better of doing is creating a custom view (a 'classic' view would be simplest to start with), adding the following widgets:

    1. Go to Settings > Views section > Manage Dashboards/Views
    2. Click 'Add classic dashboard'
    3. Leave the view type as summary, and give your view a sensible name, then click submit.
    4. Add the resources 'Map' and 'All Groups' to either column, and click 'preview'
    5. Hit the 'edit' button at the top of the 'Map' widget, and select the map you created previously in Network Atlass

You can also edit the group resource to change the way it displays the groups within the widget.

This should give you the best of both worlds, your old Map along with a list of the groups you have created Slight smile

  • Hey

Thanks for your answer.  So we got this: Orion Platform HF3, NCM HF1, NPM HF3, NTA HF2, SAM HF3: 2020.2.6

So what I want to achieve is to move away from Atlas Maps and user Orion Maps where device groups are imported, similar to the below:

So when NOC Admins logging, they see our DC and core sites view, click on the icon, it displays all devices inside that group and there is a topology map attached of the main/core connections.

Then when you click on one of the device groups, you get the following view:

What I want to get is an Orion topology/map added as a widget (customer map I created for that site/device group), but if I do it inside the group, I believe it applies to all groups.

I hope it makes sense. Or perhaps I do something wrong, and there is another way to achieve the same.

  • Orion Maps DOES NOT yet support the capability to associate a map to a group.

I say yet - that should be hopefully coming. Meanwhile you can try workaround detailed here: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/content-exchange/the-orion-platform/m/custom-html/3438 but do note this doesn't work on 2022.4.x as it appears SolarWinds have changed security and that breaks <script> tags.

  • Yes.  given the prevalence of small scripts all over, I have advised a previous employer to hold up on the upgrade...

  • Ah. Yes, that's correct. Unfortunately the default group view is the same for all groups.

What you'd need to do is setup a custom view, and use the view limitation options beneath the columns to limit it to a specific group, and give them the link.

The only thing to be careful of is that the map will also be constrained to that limitation, so you might need to include some devices in the group which would not usually be in it, in order for the map to display everything you need it to.
