External vCenter added (successfully) to monitoring, doesn't appear in Virtualization Pooling Settings

I was given the task of adding an external vCenter, located in another domain, to SolarWinds monitoring. There is no trust relationship between the domains.

I created a new local account in vCenter, added even the administrator role to it. On the firewall in my domain, I unblocked traffic on port 443 from pooling node to vCenter and vice versa. In addition, during troubleshooting I unblocked port 161, 80 and 5989 from pooling node to vCenter. Unfortunately, SolarWinds, after adding the vCenter to monitoring (successfully), displays a summary, then nowhere does this new vCenter show....

  • Hi,

Here are some steps you could take:
    1. Verify Credential Permissions: Although you used an administrator role, confirm within vCenter that the local account you created has the necessary permissions applied correctly, especially the Read-Only and Browse Datastore permissions.
    2. Check Polling Method: Navigate in the SolarWinds Platform Web Console to Settings > All Settings > Manage Virtual Devices (under Node & Group Management) > VMware tab. Select your vCenter and check the Polling Method. Ensure it is set to VMAN Orion (Recommended)
    3. Confirm ICMP is Enabled: Verify that ICMP is not blocked by firewalls or network configurations between your SolarWinds polling node and the vCenter server.
    4. Review Firewall Rules: Re-verify that firewall rules allow bi-directional traffic on port 443 between the polling node and the vCenter.
  • Nino's point 3 is where I expect you're stuck

You can add as a node and as a vcenter, and the latter is what shows up in the virtualization summary
