Does anyone use SolarWinds to monitor networked assets that constantly move?

I am curious... and would like know if anyone is actively using the SolarWinds platform to monitor networked assets that constantly move, like semi trucks, delivery vehicles, nascars, robots that move around a warehouse, fleet of drones, etc. What devices are being monitored, how are they networked, how are they polled, what information is pulled, and how are they being displayed?

  • Apologies, I guess this was posted in the wrong forum.

  • Yeah probably.
I saw this one the day it was posted and though "Eeh, had stuff that moved a little bit, but not like that"

I think the motion doesnt really matter, if they're offline for a bit there's maybe benefit for an agent and you've got to worry about nulls more

If the routing changed as it moved and that was important I suppose you'd want poll topology more frequently

Usually location's polled by an SNMP attribute/windows AD attribute, until you fill it in custom, I'd imagine you'd want to have something specific you could poll for GPS and insert that in the Worldmap_Latitude and Worldmap_Longitude attributes. There is something like that is Meraki for example (and I had to keep an eye on people nabbing WAPS for a bit)

I did once set a WPM transaction looking at a map of my nicked bike, that moved around a bit, fun times.

  • Many medical vehicles have full networks installed including routers/switches because a lot of the medical equipment inside is ethernet connected. We don't monitor them for Up/Down but we do collect SNMP information, Syslogs, and Traps, etc..

Some items include special ambulances, portable CT Scan units, Event bus's such as for blood donation, mammogram vehicles, etc.

When the vehicle is in use we monitor all of the normal items you would for a router/switch except for Up/Down.
