SolarWinds User Import Tool

Trying to understand the user import tool for AD.   I am able to create new users and map some of the attributes.   I'm having issue mapping the st attribute.   The field is not showing in the To field to pick from.  there are several other attributes that the user account shows in AD but does not show in the SW tool.

The following attributes in AD are not found in the tool.

The st,  the lower case l and lower case o

  • So, the easiest thing to use AD for users in Solarwinds is not to "import" users, but to put them in AD groups based on what permissions you want them to have in SW.

That way you add the group into SW, not each individual user, and the permissions the group has is what the user gets.   You can either leverage the browser passed username for authentication, which works pretty well, or if you want to get a bit fancier, set up SAML groups and authenticate them via SAML.

I would do anything import-wise though...

  • the "solar winds user import tool" is for creating users in bulk in a new domain.  Mapping from a CSV file to create user accounts, and map certain attributes.  I have over 1000 user accounts in one AD domain that is going away.  I've exported the users and using the tool allows importing.  (just to create the AD accounts) The groups are different between the two domains, So the groups other than the domain standard will have to be reassigned anyway.   The tool allows for mapping attributes such as Last Name, First Name, UPN, email address, phone numbers, and fields...  The country code is attribute of c, and a simple attribute of City is lower case L.  but L is not a mapping option neither is z for zip code.    so this makes importing simple things like City, State, and Zip not available to map from a csv file.
