SolarWinds Exchange Monitor Quick Reference Guide

Version 4

SolarWinds® Exchange Monitor is a free tool that allows users to monitor Microsoft® Exchange Server 2013 and 2016. The exchange monitoring tool provides basic information about the server’s metrics, services, and database availability groups.

Download and run the tool for the first time

    1. Download the SolarWinds® Exchange Monitor here: http://www.solarwinds.com/exchange-monitor
    2. Unzip it.
    3. Run exchangemonitor.exe
    4. Accept the terms of the license agreement.
    5. The installation wizard will then check if all the installation requirements are met. If Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) is missing, it will install it. You’ll see a message saying: “Preparing Application for first use.”

    Configure your global settings

By clicking the Settings button on the top-right corner of the application, you’ll be able to:

    1. Set your default polling interval
    2. Set metrics that you wish to monitor and their thresholds
      • Each metric has warning and critical threshold defined out-of-the box
    3. Select services that you wish to monitor
    4. Enable/disable desktop notifications – If enabled, desktop notifications will pop up (metric exceeded threshold / service is down / DAG is not healthy) when the application is running in the background
    5. Show only most recent notifications – If enabled, notifications for the same metric/service/DAG on the same server will be overwritten by latest one
    6. Write notifications to Windows Event Viewer – When enabled, the application will write every notification into the Event Viewer in SolarWinds Exchange Monitor log

        7. Start Exchange Monitor with Windows – When enabled, the application will start automatically as when the user logs in

    Add an Exchange Server

Exchange Monitor will let you add any 2013 or 2016 Exchange Server (build number = 15.00.xxxx.xxx or 15.01.xxxx.xxx). However, only versions up to 15.01.1034.026 have been tested.

In order to add an Exchange Server, you need to provide either IP address or FQDN and credentials.

Once the server is successfully added, Exchange Monitor will automatically run an initial poll to retrieve statistics from the Exchange Server.

    Edit server alias

By clicking the three dots in the list of monitored servers, you can edit the Exchange server or delete from the tool completely. By clicking the Edit button, you have an option to edit the server alias used by Exchange Monitor or edit the credentials used to connect to the Exchange Server.

    Local server settings

Exchange Monitor lets you define metrics and services to monitor per server. Exchange Monitor will apply global settings to the server when you first add it. If you wish to change thresholds on some of the metrics or turn off monitoring for a particular service, all of these local (per server) settings are available via the COMMANDS dropdown in the top-right corner:

    Notifications

SolarWinds Exchange Monitor has a notifications drop-down menu, where it stores all events happening on your monitored Exchange Servers.

    Event types:

    • Metric exceeded warning threshold
    • Metric exceeded critical threshold
    • Service is not in running state
    • DAG health is warning
    • DAG health is critical
    • Data not available
    • Could not connect to server
