Failover vs SwitchOver - Test a Failover

Version 1

In this article i have just included some of the common questions and scenarios are been discussed in relation to Solarwinds FOE (FailOver) Testing

Failover DOES trigger successfully in the following scenario

    ---KILLING SERVICE - Failover Triggered

Went into FOE Manager --> Application--> Services --> Orion Module Engine --> Edit --> On first failure --> Switchover

    - Kill the Solarwinds.BusinessLayerHost.exe --> the failover triggered

    - Secondary [became active]

    - Primary [FOE services completely shutdown]

    - Becuase it was Switchover.

    - Went into Primary [started the FOE services manually]

---I TOOK OFF THE POWER CABLE OF THE SERVER , IN VM simple select POWER OFF CTRL + E

    - This replicates un-expected shutdown or in simpler words power failure

    - This caused the Failover to trigger successfully & the Secondary took over the role (as Active box)

--- I TOOK OFF THE CABLE OF CHANNEL NIC

    - This triggered the failover to the Secondary server

    - In VM simply go into the Guest Settings - Virtual Machine Properties - NIC's -

    - Under Device status - Un-check Connected

    - This triggered the switch over.
