WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON FOR VIRTUALIZATION MANAGER (UPDATED April 10, 2017)

With the current release of Virtualization Manager (VMAN) 7.1, PerfStack, Predictive Recommendations, & Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring for AWS have been added to the VMAN feature set. As part of SolarWinds effort to evolve VMAN into a complete monitoring and management tool for virtualization, we are already working on our next release.  Here are the highlights of what we are currently working on:

Unexpected Simplicity

  • Removal of the appliance dependency by moving to native Orion installer for VMAN
    • VMAN Polling natively on Orion
    • Capacity Planning on Orion - Improved functionality and modeling of user based scenario planning
    • Native Orion Search functionality
  • Poll Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)
  • VMware vCenter and Microsoft Hyper-V Events in VMAN Perfstack
  • Improved Orion Charting
  • Improved Install/Upgrade - Faster, simplified product upgrades and installation of hotfixes, including updating multiple Orion products simultaneously.

  • Integrated Disaster Recovery Engine - Disaster recovery will provide redundancy to the Orion platform in multi-subnet deployment configurations.

  • Windows Authentication for SQL DB - Orion can optionally use AD user credentials to authenticate to the SQL database instead of SQL local credentials.

  • Support for SQL AlwaysOn - Support for SQL AlwaysOn in a multi-subnet failover configuration

  • Orion on RDS - Support for Amazon RDS as the repository for the Orion database

  • PerfStack Improvements - Including support for Syslog and SNMP traps, DPA integration, alert visualization and correlation improvements, NCM change correlation, and export to Excel.

  • Improved dashboard customization

Performance Optimization

  • Recommendations
    • Storage performance-based recommendations

      • Integrate SRM data into recommendations
    • Network performance-based recommendations
      • Integrate NPM & NTA data into recommendations
  • Affinity & anti-infinity policies
  • Batch execution of recommendations at the same time

Hybrid IT

  • Extending VMAN functionality to cloud infrastructure monitoring:
    • management actions, monitoring (sprawl and alerting), capacity planning, & recommendations.
  • Provide cloud infrastructure monitoring for Azure
  • vSphere vSAN - Integration with the VSAN API for in-depth VSAN storage reporting in VMAN.

If you don't see what you are looking for here, you can always add your idea(s) and vote on features in our Virtualization Manager Feature Requests forum.

  • Looking forward to seeing many of these new features.

  • When there will be a true xen server support?

  • I'm alarmed by the omission of the granular environment searching the current VMAN supports and which has been supported since VMAN was Hyper9. In particular, it is very useful to me to be able to search for VMs or hosts matching arbitrary conditions. There's a trend with the "integration" of formerly third-party products into NPM wherein extremely valuable features get left by the wayside. Until reasonable feature parity to native VMAN is present in NPM, getting rid of the standalone VMAN appliance is premature.

Advanced search capabilities as you described will be part of a core Orion platform intiative that will be available to all products that plug into the Orion platform. This is currently a work in progress and I will make sure to update thIs page with that information.

We investigated support for Xen Server but during this time market share has dropped and customer requests have significantly dropped off as well. During this same time period, requests for new functionality such as software defined storage and hybrid cloud support for Azure & AWS increased, thereby taking priority over XenServer support.  We continue to watch the XenServer market very closely. If there is an industry market shift then SolarWinds will reprioritize accordingly

    Hi Chris,

Any idea when the next version will be released?

I'm looking forward to the removal of the appliance dependency by moving to native Orion installer for VMAN.

It's frustrating having to swap between Orion and Virtualisation Manager due to the limited info being fed from VM to Orion.

    cheers,

    Tarkan

  • Based on my understanding, get ready for more frustration. It looks like everything that is not currently getting fed to Orion is going to be removed from the product, so that's a vast amount of information and visibility that will no longer be available, just as has happened with Storage Manager.

    Oh dear...i hope Not.

i suppose that's one way of removing the appliance dependancy.

It was the VM appliance that sold this product to my business, not Orion.

I was hoping for VM functionality & information with a polished Orion feel in the next version.

VMAN has been moving functionality to the Orion platform for several releases (e.g. Virtualization alerts, Sprawl, Perfstack ...aka performance analyzer ) while adding new functionality that doesn't exist in the appliance (recommendations, Cloud monitoring, & AppStack). The product team will continue to do so after this next release so that functionality is not lost but gained.  I would love the chance to review what you feel may be missing from a future release and discuss your use cases of VMAN in your environment.

  • Tarkan

We are not forcing customers such as yourself to migrate off the appliance in the next release.  In fact, you will have the chance to monitor your environment with the new version and the legacy version of VMAN and can easily switch the polling method to Orion and use the just the Orion version of VMAN at your discretion.  I will reach out to you offline to discuss your use cases further.
