Introducing the ability to search custom fields on Service Catalog requests
The ability to search, filter, and sort provides powerful ways for your agents to work within SolarWinds Service Desk. We’ve now added custom fields from Service Requests to the search, sort, and filter capabilities. As with all new custom fields mentioned above, please enable these in the settings to make them available for searching, filtering, and sorting.

Today, we rolled out Phase 1 of our changes to Custom Fields and how they work within SolarWinds Service Desk – Please review this prior THWACK post which includes the multi-phase approach to the changes [].
Phase 1 includes two main changes
Introduction of toggling Custom Fields availability for Search, Filtering, and Sorting
Custom forms, custom fields, and dynamic form rules provide powerful means of creating sophisticated forms unique to your evolving needs across your organization. As you continue to adopt more of these forms, it is common to accumulate hundreds or sometimes over a thousand custom fields for all the different areas of your business. However, many of these fields are not needed by your agents when searching, sorting, or filtering various views across the platform such as incident lists, dashboards, and reports. Making every custom field available for searching, filtering, and sorting provides limited value and, in some special cases, can lead to slower performance.
We’ve now introduced a method for selecting only the custom fields and their associated data that you want to be available for searching, filtering, and sorting.
ACTION REQUIRED: Please review the documentation and the new configuration page to make the selections most appropriate for your needs.
As a reminder:
- During Phase 1 (that’s today), all custom fields that exist today will still be available for searching, filtering, and sorting regardless of your selection.
- ACTION REQUIRED: Starting today, any new custom fields added must be enabled for searching, filtering, and sorting.
- In Phase 2, releasing next month, any custom field you have not selected as available for searching, filtering, and sorting will no longer show up when agents search, filter, or sort by custom field.

Adding updated data to the PowerBI connector
The power of an analytics dashboard created in PowerBI becomes increasingly evident with more live data. We’ve now added the “updated_at” field as part of the connector flow so you can build more up to date reports and dashboards as objects within Service Desk are updated.
