I know, the answer to this question is probably old news to everyone here, but I found myself contemplating a similar question recently, so I did some digging. Here's a quick summary of my findings.

 

IPv6 - A Brief Overview

IPv6 stands for Internet Protocol version 6, and it's currently in place to eventually replace IPv4, with which we're all much more familiar. This impending switch was put in the works to address the inevitability of our running out of new IPv4 addresses. This concern grows more critical every day as we continue to add mobile devices worldwide - devices that all need IP addresses. Some of these devices are even being developed to support only IPv6, further validating the need for the IPv4-to-IPv6 switch. According to Wikipedia, "The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) suggested that all Internet servers be prepared to serve IPv6-only clients by January 2012."

 

IPv6 Migration Trends

A few months ago, we had a post on our Whiteboard blog about IPv6 Adoption – What We Are Seeing. This post states that IPv6 adoption continues to move at a tentative speed, but highlights three prominent leaders in the effort: Asia Pacific countries, federal agencies worldwide, and Internet service providers. By and large, though, most of the pros we're talking to are still planning their migrations or implementing dual-stack devices (devices that support both IP versions). If you're still not even there, I'd recommend you check out New Year's Resolutions for Geeks Like Me. The resolutions in this post, though 2 years old now, are still quite relevant. Pay close attention to #9.

 

IPv6 Support for SolarWinds Products

Looking at a post from about the same time as the Whiteboard post I just mentioned, it's clear SolarWinds is committed to providing you the IPv6 support you need when you need it. That is not to say we support IPv6 in all of our products, but we're getting there. The important thing is that we're listening to your feedback and adding the feature to the appropriate products at the appropriate times. This post is several months old, so check your products' release notes for the most up-to-date information.

In any case, I particularly liked the recommendation from the New Year's Resolution blog post about deploying an IPv6 subnet, even if only to familiarize yourself with the unique concerns and nomenclature of the technology. Had I done this two years ago, I probably wouldn't have had to do all the digging that led up to writing this post.
