The dev guys here have been working hard (as usual) and I'm pleased to announce that we now have new versions of Orion NPM (Network Performance Monitor) and NCM (Network Configuration Manager) available for download. For existing customers with active software maintenance these are free upgrades. For folks that haven't bought Orion yet, you can download an evaluation version from SolarWinds.Com to try out for 30 days.

Orion NPM version 9.5 offers several cool enhancements. My Top 3 would include wireless (it's built in now so that you can manage wired and wireless networks side by side), unpluggable port modes (lets you manage user ports differently than ports connected to servers, trunk ports, and etc), support for Cisco EnergyWise (a cool new way of reducing and tracking power consumption), and the new Network Atlas (OK, that's 4 but who's counting?).

Orion NCM version 5.5 also has a sweet set of new features. My favorites are tighter integration with Orion NPM and support for Cisco EnergyWise (not just the monitoring that Orion NPM provides but NCM helps to automate the deployment of this new Cisco feature.

I could add a lot more detail here but really the best way to learn about the new versions is to download and try them for yourself. Good luck and be sure to let us know what you think either here or within the Orion NPM and Orion NCM user forums.

This week I traveled to Washington DC to speak on the subject of Advanced IP Address Management. For those of you that attended - Thank you!!!  It was a great seminar with lots of attendee participation and we shared some great stories and best practices. One attendee shared with me that she is about to start a project to readdress her entire large enterprise and we had a blast chatting about "gotchas" to avoid and best practices to adhere to.

For those of you that couldn't attend, we've decided to host a webcast on this same subject next week, Thursday, May 21st at 10:00 CDT. Click here to sign up. We'll discuss things like:

  • When to use public vs. private IP address space
  • Complexities caused by private address space
  • What you really need to know about IPv6 today
  • Best practices for assigning and tracking IP addresses
  • Key technologies for IP address tracking and management

Ping me if you have questions/suggestions for the webcast and hope to hear from you then.

Cast your vote...

Today some of the SolarWinds products have been nominated for the "Best Products" awards from the Network Products Guide. I think this is pretty awesome as I get to spend a lot of time with our product management, engineering, and tech support teams and I know that they work hard to deliver great products to the people they love most - our customers.

The winners will be decided by you - actual users of the applications out in the industry that care enough to go to the website and cast their votes.

So, pause American Idol, the Celtics vs. Magic game, or that rerun of Family Guy and go cast your vote. Let's take this one down for the home team folks.
