VoIP Monitoring in VNQM (before 4.1 release)
SolarWinds VNQM already provided a wide expanse of VoIP monitoring data on intuitive dashboards to gather and show:

What’s New in VNQM 4.1: VoIP Gateway & PRI Trunk Monitoring
As discussed in an earlier blog announcing the Release Candidate, VNQM 4.1 now supports Cisco® MGCP PRI Gateway monitoring and collects PRI Trunk data for advanced VoIP utilization monitoring.
You can now benefit from:
- Real-time VoIP utilization monitoring on Cisco MGCP PRI Gateways
- Detailed channel data distribution UI
- Trunk data distribution and utilization charts for improved capacity usage information
- Historical VoIP & data utilization statistics for gateways
In addition to the existing dashboard views (as listed above), VNQM 4.1 now includes new Gateway Detail View Page for monitoring VoIP gateway details which allows you to
- Monitor top call quality issues for each gateway
- List of all failed calls related to a gateway
- Track current percent utilization for each interface
Product Integration with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
Now VNQM integrates with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) allowing you to see real-time device network availability and throughput of your gateway routers and call managers that are monitored using VNQM.
Conversely, on the NPM Node Details Page, you now have an additional sub-view called ‘VoIP & Network Quality” that allows you to see VoIP and WAN performance from VNQM data along with the network performance metrics and charts on NPM.

What is a VoIP Gateway?
A VoIP gateway is what converts telephony traffic from analog to digital (IP) and vice-versa. Traffic coming in from the public switched telephone network (PSTN) flows through a gateway and gets converted to digital packets (for transportation over a LAN or other IP-based network). The other way round is also possible when digital IP traffic is fed through a VoIP gateway for conversion back to analog so it can be transported out over the PSTN. Essentially, a VoIP gateway acts as a bridge between an IP network and the PSTN.
What is PRI?
In the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), there are two levels of service:
- Basic Rate Interface (BRI) – intended for the home and small enterprise
- Primary Rate Interface (PRI) - intended for larger users.
Both rates include a number of B-channels and a D-channel. Each B-channel carries data, voice, and other services. The D-channel carries control and signaling information. PRI
The Primary Rate Interface consists of 23 B-channels and one 64 Kpbs D-channel using a T-1 line or 30 B-channels and 1 D-channel using an E1 line. Typically, a PRI user on a T-1 line can have up to 1.544 Mbps service or up to 2.048 Mbps service on an E1 line.
What is PRI Trunking?
PRI trunking is a means of transmitting many different voice and data communications amongst multiple locations allowing the addition of large numbers of voicelines (as much as 23) at the same time.
