Years ago, I would take my kids with me to SQL Saturdays when I was working at them and/or presenting. One time, my daughter (she was 8) decided she would try to stump me. She raised her hand, I called on her, she pointed to the screen and asked, “What is latency?” with the attitude of someone who expects you won’t have an answer. Without hesitation, I explained it to her:

“Latency is a measure of how long something takes. Like, when we call you to come down for breakfast in the morning and it takes you ten minutes to come downstairs, and so you have to shove food down your throat so you can get to school on time, your latency would be ten minutes.”

She didn’t like my reply as much as the audience did.
