The age-old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” has long been answered with occupations such as: firefighter, ballerina, doctor, or princess. Why, you may wonder, does systems administrator rarely make the cut? As a critical member of the organization they support, surely a more rewarding and interesting career than SysAdmin can’t possibly exist!

While we know how exciting, versatile, and important our jobs truly are, do the people closest to us understand? When you get a text message from your remote monitoring system during a soccer game or dance recital, what do you tell your kids? If you break from analyzing system logs to enjoy a family dinner, how do you explain that a log is more than a chopped up tree trunk? Even with all your tireless explaining, how many times have you heard a version of this phrase: “My mom does something with computers…I think”?

In honor of Systems Administrator Day this year, we want to know what your family thinks you do 24/7, rain or shine, day or night. Whether it’s “Stuff on a computer,” “Emails their friends,” “Fixes problems,” or “Uhh…technology?”, let us know by July 18, and we’ll give you 250 THWACK points—and, if necessary, moral support from your fellow techies who do understand that you have the coolest job in the world.

Monitoring, identifying issues, troubleshooting…these words are all-too-familiar, and their associated tasks take up most of your time as a technology professional. But, what if they didn’t? Imagine a world where you don't have to solve multiple problems on a daily basis—a world where you could use your technology skills to do anything…create a whole new infrastructure optimized for your organization, plan and enjoy a much-deserved family vacation, or even use blockchain or AI to solve world issues. Anything!

If you had more free time, how you would use your technical knowledge and insight to move your organization, your life, community, and the world forward? Tell us!

It’s just three easy steps:

  • Click HERE to take the survey (Hurry! You only have until July 30th)
  • Insert your THWACK® username on the last question
  • As a thank you, we’ll deposit 500 THWACK points into your account!*

*Points will be awarded the week after the survey closes.

In this mission we asked you to boldly go where no THWACKster has ever gone before.

We required you to dedicate yourself to an epic voyage to reach the nexus of your network universe.

You expertly navigated with the latest SolarWinds® Network Insight™ for Cisco Nexus®.

It is with great pride that we declare this mission, accomplished!

We need your help!

Gartner Peer Insights recently announced the Customers’ Choice for Application Performance Monitoring Tools, and with your help, this is an opportunity for us to show the world what we do for you everyday. While we (SolarWinds) strive to provide you with the best solutions for your everyday IT challenges, we would like to ask you for your feedback to help us be even better.

Please consider evaluating on Gartner Peer Insights and help your peers with sharing of your honest experience with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor.

It’s just 3 easy steps:

  • Click HERE to leave your review (Hurry! You only have until July 1st)
  • Post a screenshot of your completed review below
  • As a thank you, we’ll deposit 1,000 Thwack points into your account!

Here are a few key things to keep in mind:

  • Though you will be asked to create an account, your name and company name will not be attached to your review. Demographic details (your role, industry, and size of your organization) will be the only identifying details displayed with your comments.
  • Personal email addresses are not accepted by Gartner Peer Insights. You must use your business email address to create an account, or sign in with LinkedIn.
  • All submissions are reviewed by Gartner staff to ensure validity and maintain the integrity of the forum. You are not permitted to review your own, your competitors’, or your affiliates’ products or services.
  • You can check the status of your review at any time by logging in to your reviewer profile.
  • The more details you can share about SolarWinds the better. Keep your review relevant, and think of what you wish you had read before you made your own purchase decision, and try to be as helpful as you can.

Dearest THWACK,

My, how you’ve grown! If it wasn’t for the National Institutes of Health and US National Library of Medicine defining fifteen years as being ‘adolescence,’ I’d say you’ve grown into a fine adult.

I guess you’re just mature for your age. Check out this timeline, to see how much everything has changed!

From my perspective as your Product Manager, and as one of your loving adoptive guardians, maybe being an adolescent a few more years isn’t such a bad thing. It means you’re still growing and changing for the better. It means your greatest years are still ahead of you. Most importantly, it means you have countless lives you’re still going to touch.

I know I speak for the rest of your parents (DanielleH, wabbott, sonofagum, mrs.alterego) in saying we’re proud of you. So mighty damn proud.

I mention these people, because so much of who you are today can be traced back to their influence, their love, and their passion at making you successful.

Danielle has been fearless. She’s been your advocate from her first day at SolarWinds and will stay your biggest fan until long after this wild ride is over. There is nary a feature she hasn’t influenced, a day she hasn’t championed, and a night she hasn’t lost sleep over making you the best possible environment for all of your users.

Wendy is the envy of the entire parenting team. Her voice and her writing style has been the backbone of THWACK’s personality. Not a single one of your contests, missions, or special events have gone without the impact of her pen and her keyboard.

Rachel is single-handedly responsible for the growth of some of your most important and signature features. Her tenure at the helm of your tech kept the ship upright and plugging forward to true north.

Casey has been hiding in the shadows for far too long. When I say he’s responsible for every line of code written on THWACK since 2012, I MEAN he is responsible for every line of code written on THWACK since 2012.

Finally, the work of these six people and myself would be absolutely nothing if it wasn’t for the community.

What we do, we do for you.

What you do…actually, we can’t even begin to understand who or what you do it for.

You’ve penned 3,300 blog posts, spawned 8,200 ideas, authored 10,000 documents, asked and answered questions on 76,000 discussions, and created over 120,000 total pieces of content.

That wasn’t us. That was you. Every user. Every MVP. Thank you.

Folks, what we’re witnessing here is the rare, wild Loggidus Dataius in its natural habitat. What an incredible opportunity to observe its natural behavior! Oh! What do we have here? This is fantastic! Here comes the even rarer Robotdus Orionus! They have natural organizational skills not unlike a sheepdog when it sees an unruly herd of sheep. This is amazing! Robotdus Orionus has effortlessly managed to corral the Loggidus Dataius.

Be sure to tune in next week as we send our correspondent to observe the common Bandwidth Hog!

Your log data contains a wealth of information about the health and performance of your network and servers. But without a unified view of logs and infrastructure, you run the risk of missing key signals. The new SolarWinds® Log Manager for Orion® finally puts your log data right where it belongs, in the heart of your Orion console.

In this bonus mission, we’ll show you how you too can put your logs where they belong.

“Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go

So make the best of this test, and don't ask why

It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time”

– Green Day, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”

As graduation season approaches, songs like Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” will be sung by students everywhere reflecting on fond memories and lessons learned in school. Graduation is a symbol of transition and change, and a milestone that represents growth, progress, and transformation. Just as education drives growth in students, digital transformation drives progress in an organization and ultimately innovations in the data center. The overall path of digital transformation leads towards innovation and progress, but not without the ‘lessons learned in time’ from setbacks.

In the spirit of graduation season, we want to know what technology you “graduated” to in 2018. Did you transition to serverless computing, experiment with AI and machine learning, or implement containers, microservices, or blockchain technology? What drove the need to “graduate” to new technology? The C-suite jumping on the AI bandwagon? The need for cost efficiency and agility? As you reflect on the past year, what were your biggest successes and failures during your digital transformation journey?

Let us know what technologies you “graduated” to this past year and any ‘lessons learned’ from your digital transformation successes (or failures) by May 18th and we’ll put 250 THWACK points in your account!

Remember THWACKsters, only YOU can prevent data breaches!

Our goal with April's mission was to increase your awareness of the consequences of data breaches as well as introduce two SolarWinds® tools that can help improve compliance: Log & Event Manager, log management software for security, compliance, and troubleshooting, and Patch Manager, intuitive patch management software for quickly addressing software vulnerabilities. Here's to another mission accomplished!
