"SAM - hands down is totally in my wheel-house though it's usually a toss-up between that and all NPM offers cause there's so much (automated reporting, universal device polling, alerting with remediation, etc.)."

“You’ve been given a great gift, George: A chance to see what the world would be like without you.”

OK, it may seem strange to quote a Christmas flick right about now, but even in the middle of summer, “It’s a Wonderful Life” is still a classic. And more than that, it highlights a really interesting thought experiment: Imagining what the world would be like without you in it.

You may not have our own Clarence Odbody, AS2 (Angel Second Class) to help do so, but you do, of course, have your imagination! And so we want to know what you think the world would be like without you, the venerable IT pros of the world, the unsung heroes of modern business.

Using the comments field below, lay it on us! Tell us your imaginings of what the world would be like if everyone woke up one morning and all of a sudden there were no more IT pros. Would end user-induced IT anarchy ensue? Would datacenters catch fire? Would the world collapse into a dark, dystopian society where hoards of dirty, withering humans bow down before blue screens of death just to absorb a few rays of their faint, sad light? OK, unlikely, but you never know.

Share your thoughts with us by August 10, and we’ll give you 250 thwack points to ease the stress of imagining such a scary world.

Over the past several weeks, we have seen a drastic increase in spam; in fact, this is the 2nd major attack in 3 months! We wanted to let our community know what we are doing to help tighten our security and alleviate further disruption from these annoying spammers, but first, we want to sincerely apologize for the email notifications many of you received when these spammers made it through our filters and into the community.

About 3 weeks ago, we started to see an uptick in spam accounts being created. Our filters from the last attack were catching them and giving us the ability to delete their accounts, as well as any of their content that was placed into our moderation queue. We identified the location and had a span of IP's banned; however, the more we attempted to dissuade them from joining our community, the smarter they became. They started routing their IP's so now it looked like they were hitting us from the US; we increased our filter threshold's but they were starting to attack at such a fast rate, they were actually breaking through the filters. We have been working with our vendor non-stop, and we've fixed a few bugs and buckled down even tighter on account creation. Each and every person is now sent through an approval process before they are allowed to create an account. This is temporary as we are working with a developer to create a plug-in that will allow us to set an "age-limit" as a requirement for posting without moderation needed. We hope this will help catch a majority of spammers without introducing further restrictions on our existing members.

For example:

  • New user rach356 has been a member for 1 week and never posted anything. She creates a discussion, but her content will be sent into a moderation queue before the community sees it so an admin can make sure the discussion is not spam. Once rach356 has been approved, future posts will not need to be moderated.

Also, we have enabled our 3rd party spam vendor, and if you recall from the last time, they are rather strict at first with what they consider to be spam, but give it time to "learn" and much of your content will start to filter into the community without being sent to moderation.

Finally, the other filters we have enabled will place content into our moderation queue simply because you are replying to a post that was initially moderated, even if you are an "old-timer". We know this can be a slight annoyance, but until our new plug-in is fully built, this is how the existing spam filter works. We are hoping to have the new plug-in ready by the beginning of August.

Thank you for being so understanding and patient during these times; we really appreciate the support you give to us, especially during times like these! As always, if you have questions, comments, suggestions, etc. please don't hesitate to reach out to one of us. ( DanielleH, maria.bungau, mrs.alterego)

We know that the key to every super SysAdmin's success is their IT lair.  Post a picture of your server room or work space to help us celebrate SysAdmin Day and complete this activity for the July mission for 150 points.

If you cannot share a picture due to internal policies, you can simply post a comment and describe it. Tell us something funny about your work space, share a story or an anecdote. Just get creative and you'll still get those points.

*Cue wolf howling in the background

We’ve all heard spooky tales of hardware stored in rooms where the temperature was up to 140 degrees, servers drowning because someone left the window open during a rainstorm, and IT tickets that made the hair on the back of an admin's neck stand up..

Tell us about the strangest request you’ve ever gotten, the dumbest question a user ever asked, or those days when Murphy's law seemed to only apply to you.

Write a short SysAdmin horror story in the comment box below to complete this activity for the July Mission and earn 150 points!

SysAdmin Day is coming up, but we think you deserve more than one day of recognition. That’s why we’re commemorating the occasion for a full month. After you’ve marched in the parade, posed for a statue, and had brownies and ice cream in the break room, join us for a fun game of SysAdmin Squares! That’s right, it’s Hollywood Squares Bingo style, using events, experiences, and scenarios that you as a SysAdmin come across every day. You haven’t played Bingo until you’ve played it the SysAdmin Squares way. Here is your chance to win points and prizes for dealing with password resets, server outages, and Bob in marketing. Look back and laugh at what you achieve every day throughout the year.

In traditional bingo you wait to hear letter/number combinations to mark your card until someone yells “Bingo,” and then you fling your game card across the room because you haven’t had a bingo since the fourth grade. With SysAdmin Squares you earn your daily square just by participating and adding a little fun to your day. Mark your squares by choosing an option from an assortment of questions, clues, adventure stories, and more.

July Mission

Each week we'll have a combination of questions/activities that all you will complete in order to earn your daily square. After completing all 5 of the week’s activities, you will earn a Bingo, which enters you to win the weekly prize. Those of you who earn a "blackout" by completing all the squares will be entered to win the grand prize. Download your game card attached to this blog post, and let’s play!

Mission Rules:

  1. One question or activity will open everyday (Monday through Friday) starting on July 6th.
  2. Once a question has opened, it will remain open until August 2nd @ 11:59PM CDT.
  3. You must correctly answer or complete each daily question within a given week to be entered to win the weekly prize.
    • For example, correctly answer all 5 questions during week 1 (July 6th - July 12th) and your name will be in the week 1 drawing which will be announced on July 13th.
  4. Correctly answer and complete all 20 daily questions and activities before August 2nd @ 11:59PM CDT and you will be entered to win the grand prize!
  5. 150 points are being awarded for each correctly answered question or activity competed.  This means you can earn up to 3,000 points over the course of the mission.
    • Points/badges will be added to profiles once the mission has closed.
  6. Weekly prize drawings will be held on the dates indicated below.
  7. Grand prize drawing for the Nvidia Sheild Pro + Video Gaming Chair will be held on August 3rd!
  8. Terms & Conditions attached below.

Grand Prize: Nvidia Sheild Pro + Video Gaming Chair

You are a lean, mean VM sprawl fighting machine.

You eat network config errors for breakfast.

You laugh in the face of slow SQL queries.

You…are an IT pro.

And as an IT pro, you bring a tremendous amount of value to your employer. Not only do you battle printers big and small, smite network performance issues like the filth they are and conquer ID10T errors all day long, but you alone are uniquely positioned to take the company to new heights riding on the back of peak performing technology.

Yes, you are the hero of modern business. But are you the unsung hero?

That is what we would like to find out: Do you feel your employer recognizes and rewards you for the value you bring to the company?

To help us get to the heart of this issue, you’re invited to take our quick two-minute survey. And if you take it by July 14, we’ll give you 250 thwack points to say thanks.

Click here to take the survey now.
